1 Atomic Structure Chapter 3 Sections 2 and 3

2 Basic atomic theory and structure
An atom is…. The parts of an atom are…. What does an atom look like?

3 Basic Periodic Table Organization
The periodic table is…. Diagramming elements on the periodic table Atomic number is…. Atomic mass is…. Which elements are diatomic? Rows vs. columns

4 Subatomic particles in an atom
Read the first two paragraphs on p.72. Define proton, neutron, and electron Define nucleus, electron cloud, and subatomic particle Are subatomic particles the smallest particles known?

5 The modern model

6 The atomic nucleus Turn to page 75 and read about the “Composition of the Atomic Nucleus” What is the charge of a proton? What is the charge of a neutron? Summarize the 2nd paragraph, focusing on key information. What determines an atom’s identity? Why are you not learning about other subatomic particles?

7 Forces in the nucleus Read the next section titled “Forces in the Nucleus”. Why would we expect a nucleus with more than one proton to be unstable? Why is the nucleus of an atom stable? How many protons can fit within a stable nucleus? What about neutrons? What are these forces called?

8 Properties of Subatomic Particles
Look at TABLE 1 on page 76. Copy the columns labeled: Particle Symbols Relative electric charge Mass number Actual mass (kg)

9 3rd block bellringer Answer each of the following questions for a grade: Is a change of state a chemical or physical change? Provide an example. Contrast accuracy and precision. Provide an example. Convert 72 inches to centimeters. Convert 2 liters to cups. Convert 7 hours to seconds.

10 The Sizes of Atoms Read the final section on p.76 about “The Sizes of Atoms”. What is the radius of an atom? How are atomic radii expressed? Compare the radius of an atom to the radius of its nucleus. What does this mean about the size and density of the nucleus of an atom?

11 4th block bellringer Answer each of the following questions for a grade: Which elements on the periodic table are diatomic? List at least 3 here. Are subatomic particles the smallest particles known? Why are we not learning about them? Why would we expect an atomic nucleus to be unstable? What force exists that makes it stable? Explain.

12 Counting Atoms (section 3, p.77-82)
We will only cover this section through p.82 today. We’ll do the rest next week. Compare and contrast the following using a table with the word, definition, and example: Atomic number Isotope Mass number Atomic mass unit (amu) Average atomic mass

13 Designating Isotopes TABLE 3 on p.79 in your book shows 2 different ways to write an isotope. Look at the text on p.79 above the chart. Define the following: Hyphen notation Nuclear symbol Nuclide Examples of isotope notations Carbon-14, Uranium-235, etc

14 Practice problems Complete the practice problems on p.80, numbers 1, 2, and 3. After I’ve checked your answers, turn to p.87 and complete numbers 2, 3, and 4 on the section review.
