Numeracy across the Curriculum Lasswade High School Centre Gena Wright and Jayne Ross

Numeracy Outcome Trial  MNU 315M I can solve practical problems by applying my knowledge of measure, choosing the appropriate units and degree of accuracy for the task and using a formula to calculate area or volume when required. The Plan  Cross curricular project called “Christmas Boxes” “Christmas Boxes”  It will cover the above numeracy outcome and highlight to pupils that skills are transferable

Original Idea Christmas Boxes Rationale: -to create a cross curricular approach to Numeracy outcome MNU315M, measure Departments involved: -Art, CDT, Home Ec., and Maths The Idea: -To create a Christmas box for all of S1 to make The Task: -Pupils would measure and draw out the template in Maths. Decorate it in Art Accurately make and cut out in CDT and construct Filled with tasty goodies made in Home Ec. The design of the box would depend on the 5-14 Level of the pupils’ ability. Level C a Cube Level D a Cuboid Level E a Triangular Prism Level F a Pyramid

The Timeline  1 st Sept - Home Ec staff introduce the project.  8 th Sept - Maths dept teach 3-D shape and nets  22 nd Sept- Art dept begin design process  10 th Nov- CDT introduce CAD to pupils  1 st Dec – Home Ec dept make truffles and finish off the project  15 th Dec- all staff meet to evaluate the project

The First run through-Lift off  The project was introduced in Home Ec with a video clip of the Headmaster outlining the task ahead.  Each pupil was given a Project Booklet that was to act as their Passport between the departments.  Pupils started by doing a mind map and thinking about their design specification.

Mind Map and Booklet

Initial Stages  In Maths, as part of the pupils work on 3-D shape, they investigated and drew out the biggest net they could fit on to an A4 piece of paper.  Each pupil then accurately drew out 3 nets of their chosen shape. 2 were placed in their design folder. 1 for use in the Art department and 1 for CDT.

Making the Nets

Second Phase  The Project then moved on to Art where the pupils discussed themes and decided on their design for their box.  The pupils had to think about what the final design would look like once the box was constructed.  Would the Christmas trees be the correct way up?

The Design Process

Phase Three  In CDT pupils (and staff!!) had to learn how to replicate their designs using the computer package.  How do you draw a reindeer?  And what do you call him if he has no eyes?  The one that Mrs Wright tried to draw of course.

Using the Computer

Final Phase  In Home Economics pupils had to accurately measure out their truffle ingredients and make 8-10 truffles.  Construct and fill their box before sealing it.  Evaluate the whole project before taking their finished box home.

The best bit-Making the truffles and sealing the box

Maths Outcomes Covered  MTH 224S-Through practical activities I can show my understanding of the relationship between 3-D shape and their nets.  MTH 322S- I can accurately draw 2D shapes using appropriate maths instruments.

More Maths outcomes  MTH 227T-I can accurately measure and draw angles using appropriate equipment and apply my skills to problems in context.  MTH 328T-I can apply my understanding of scale when enlarging and reducing shapes using technology.

Technology Outcomes Covered  TCH 301A- I have collaborated with others to find and present information.  TCH 306C- I can gain confidence and dexterity in the use of materials, tools, equipment and software to develop skills to make quality goods

More Technology Outcomes  TCH 308C-Throughout a range of practical activities I can measure and mark out ingredients or materials accurately to ensure a satisfactory finished product.  TCH 310D – I am developing critical thinking skills to help me evaluate my own and others’ products

Future Steps An Evaluation Sheet will be issued to all staff involved. Adaptation to the Booklet. Aid of transfer of the pupils project work. Will we do it again? YES we are doing it all again next year only better!!!

Any Questions?
