1 Starting a 4-H Club Blair W. Green Brunswick County Extension Agent, 4-H & Livestock

2 Things You’ll Need In Advance Find at least 2 adults to lead the club Determine age group of club (must be between the ages of 5-19) Generally, 4-H divides age groups into 3 categories (5-8, 9-12, & 13-19); however, a club can consist of a combination of these ages Find a location for the club to meet

3 Some of the First Things To Do Recruit youth to join the club Preferably, start out with at least 5 Develop a plan of work This needs to be turned into your local 4-H office so the club can be chartered. Elect officers within the club President, Vice-President, Secretary-Treasurer, & Reporter Establish a monthly meeting date & time

4 Requirements of Club Leaders Fill out the NC 4-H Volunteer Application Pass 4-H’s background check Fill out the NC 4-H Volunteer Agreement & Standards of Behavior form Fill out the NC 4-H Volunteer Media Release Form Go through a simple training session with your local 4-H agent Commitment of serving for one year as a 4-H Club Leader

5 Requirements of Club Members Fill out an 4-H enrollment form Fill out a Medical Release form Must be notarized and filled out each year Read the 4-H Code of Conduct & be aware of it’s policies Attend monthly meetings & be an active participant in club scheduled events & activities

6 To Receive a Charter Seal… A club must have a membership of at least five Adult leaders/parents or qualified teen leaders must guide the club during the year A written program of work must be accomplished and must be submitted to the county Cooperative Extension office The club must be organized with the appropriate youth leadership

7 What Does 4-H Do For Youth? Build leadership qualities Enhances people skills & public speaking ability Teaches youth workforce & employability skills Gives a chance to explore career paths Hands-on learning Improve their relations with their family & community Encourages civic engagement & community service Promotes volunteerism
