 “I’ve used 2 reading anthologies and Daily 5/café since beginning my career, I’ve never known my students THIS WELL!!...All students are succeeding, ALL of them!”  “My students have built their reading stamina as I was able to pinpoint student struggles and drive independent instruction. I feel this was the first year I truly understood where each student struggled!”  “I am happy to see that higher achieving students aren’t doing the same work as students on level or below as they have weekly (in most cases daily even) goals that are on their level. I think the higher achieving students have benefitted the most from this.”  “My students are reading with more stamina. They have learned to take personal responsibility to read independently this year. ARC program has also helped me as a teacher better understand my students needs for improvement.”  “As a result of the implementation of American Reading Company, I feel as though students are truly able to examine a piece of text and pull evidence from it in order to prove their reason or answer…”  “ARC has helped me improve my conferencing with individual students. It has really helped me focus on specific skills when working with students. I have also seen significant improvement with the students’ desire to read more in class.”  “I like the black line resources provided, such as the genre cards and skills cards.” Q10 - Please share areas in which you have seen improvement with instruction and/or student growth using the American Reading Company.

Teacher Survey  “Extremely poor program! Would be useful in BSI classes, Special Education, or in inner-city school districts, not in Egg Harbor Township! A perfect way to get children to dislike reading!”  “I haven’t seen any. The students are going to show growth with any program. ARC puts them at a much lower level so that they can show growth and take the credit.”  “We get mixed messages from the reading specialists and from ARC coaches. The IRLA is used for summative assessment not just formative.”  “I like the ARC program, however I would like to suggest that the School Pace online program be redesigned to include a user friendly overall page to gain access to all of the students results together at one time so as to compare and analyze data more efficiently. Also, it would be helpful to know immediately from the home classroom screen the dates stated for when a student was tested last, other than just the year stated. Time consuming opening up several links to get that information. Thank you.”  “I have observed no improvement or growth with my students in relation to the ARC program. I believe a majority of their growth was attributed to the differentiated and cooperative group lessons I planned for them.”  “We still need a fluency assessment. We need some type of writing pacing guide.”  “I feel that the area in which our district needs improvement is to prolong the use of AR and STAR within the district.”  “We need more common assessments and materials.” Q11 – Please share areas in which you feel the district’s literacy program needs improvement.

Parent Survey  “Anything would work! I just need more info about how to work with the kid on the text.”  “Email”  “Board member / administration / parent / teacher meetings.”  “On one account this year I was notified that my child was conferenced with by an email…I would suggest that the teachers inform the parents more by either phone call or weekly check sheets…”  “How about holding information settings when parents can actually make it! Not when parents work with literally no notice. We asked for the company to come back but no one ever did! That is ridiculous!” Q8 – Other (please specify)

Parents Survey

Executive Summary Teachers  Timing of professional development needs to be earlier in the year.  We have already begun to train teachers in the grades that will be implementing next year.  More professional development is needed on grade level instruction and the professional development model to use has to be analyzed.  Least effective – Fishbowl  Most effective – Grade group  Meeting with ARC representative in July to discuss the areas identified through the survey. Parents  We need better communication with the parents  District goal on which we will be improving on as a district.  Survey data identifies how the parents want to be informed and what areas they want to be informed about.
