15 Activities to meet the goal Teachers will participate in training on the rubrics and assessment framework of the content area literacy curriculum for math. Teachers will participate in ongoing seminars in differentiated math instruction under the direction of the 4 instructional coaches. Teachers will participate in ongoing discussions, descriptive reviews and lesson studies via the tenets of the Professional Learning Community model. Teachers new to UMS will be trained in CRISS (Creating Independence through Student-owned Strategies).

16 UMS School Improvement Plan 2009-2011 Climate and Student Learning Goal - Urbana Middle School will experience higher academic achievement and increased student self- efficacy as a result of the use of Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS). There will be decreased numbers of discipline referrals and truants, whereas the attendance rate and achievement levels will increase.

17 Activities to meet the goal Teachers will participate in training on the rubrics, assessment framework and interpretation of assessment data relative to PBIS and SEL (Social Emotional Learning) instruction. Teachers will participate in PBIS instruction and training for students. Teachers will teach students appropriate school-wide behaviors through the use of the PBIS framework.

18 Summary 1.We are going to become better teachers so that our students become better learners. We will do that through different forms of lesson study and the ongoing assistance and support from our instructional coaches. 2.We are going to learn to get better at understanding and using our data toward the end goal of students becoming better learners. 3.We are going to concentrate on the overall UMS building climate thorough the use of PBIS to create a learning environment conducive to students becoming better learners.
