Pre-Writing To get ready to write your draft, you will be completing 2 charts as part of your pre-writing. First, collect ideas, then choose a subject. What people could you write about? What are their goals? Record the possibilities on a chart. Second, you will use a Goal-and-Outcome Chart to organize details.

Pre-Writing As the first step in your pre-writing, you will complete the chart below, telling details and feelings about the events. When you are done, put a star by the person you choose to write about. People Goals SAMPLE

Collect the Details Look up information in reference books or on the Internet. If you know the person, you may need to conduct an interview tonight… List details about your subject’s goal, the obstacles, and the outcome.

Introduction Paragraph
Lewis and Clark wanted to discover and explore new territories more than anything. They were faced with many obstacles, such as unfriendly Native Americans, rivers and waterfalls, poor weather and mountains. They had many strategies for overcoming these obstacles. Eventually they reached their goal. Tell about your person’s goal. List the obstacles to achieving the goal. Explain that there were many strategies for overcoming the obstacles. Tell us if your person met his or her goal.

Body Paragraph 1 Lewis and Clark encountered many obstacles during their journey. One of the first obstacles Lewis and Clark encountered was unfriendly Native Americans. Not long after this, they came across rushing rapids and treacherous waterfalls. As soon as they made their way past these, winter struck and they almost froze to death. The last hurdles in their journey were the gigantic, perilous Rocky Mountains. Each one of these obstacles required a brilliant strategy to overcome it. Go into detail about each obstacle and the strategy for overcoming the obstacle. Tell them in the order in which things happened.

Body Paragraph 2 Go into detail about each strategy for overcoming the obstacles. Tell them in the order in which things happened. The men dealt with each challenge differently. To make the Native Americans trust them, they brought along a woman with a child. This helped to develop good relations between the two groups. When they encountered raging rivers and waterfalls, they built solid boats to move them safely through. During the harsh winter, Lewis and Clark built a fort to shelter them from the harsh weather. Finally, they went around daunting mountains that were in their way.

Body Paragraph 3 Explain what the outcome was for each strategy.
Lewis and Clark were able to achieve their goals by developing some clever strategies to overcome the obstacles in their way. They were able to pass through unfriendly Native American land unharmed. Sturdy boats brought them through dangerous rapids and waterfalls. A well-built fort saved them all from death and good planning brought them around the mountains and to the Pacific Ocean, their goal.

Conclusion Paragraph Lewis and Clark’s goal was to search out and journey through new territories. Although they had to deal with unfriendly Native Americans, rivers and waterfalls, poor weather and mountains, as well as other obstacles, they were able to achieve their goal. Without their intelligent strategies, the journey would not have been a success. Repeat the information from the introduction in a new and interesting way. Summarize if the person did reach his/her goal.
