When Ibn Battuta arrived in West Africa Islam had been practiced there for hundreds of years Islam was popular in the cities where rulers or traders accepted it by choice or because it helped them with trade Some Islamic customs are not followed in Africa such as women covering their face

Notes (right side of paper) Mansa Musa was the greatest emperor of the empire of Mali Mali was one of the great empires during the Middle Ages in Africa Mansa Musa used the wealth of Mali to build mosques and libraries with Muslim books.

Notes (right side of paper) Mansa Musa also traveled to Makkah on his pilgrimage and showed the world the power of the Mali empire. When he traveled his caravan had thousands of people and 100 camels. Each camel carried gold.

Notes (right side of paper) When he returned he convinced Islam’s best to come to Africa and help spread Islam. Under Askia Muhammad, the emperor of the Songhai empire, local courts had to honor Islamic laws. He made Timbuktu an important center for Islamic culture in Africa. He also set up 150 schools to teach the Quran.

Notes (right side of paper) Africans who accepted Islam also adopted Islamic laws and ideas. The culture of Swahili is a blend of African and Muslim elements. Islam advanced learning. Muslim schools introduced the Arabic language to many Africans. Muslim architects built beautiful mosques and palaces in Timbuktu.

The empire was divided into provinces, like states. Each district included a chief’s clan, or group of people descended from the same ancestor. Kings controlled trade. Kingship was given to the king’s nephew
