3 www.liikennevirasto.fi The Finnish Transport Agency 3 is a multidisciplinary expert organisation specialising in transport. It is responsible for the Finnish transport infrastructure and the overall development of Finland’s transport system; enables smooth, efficient and safe travel and transport; promotes an effective transport system, traffic safety and a balanced and sustainable development of the regions; annually purchases maintenance, planning, surveying and other similar services for about 1.6 billion euros, which represents about one-third of Finland’s infrastructure field; operates under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Transport and Communications and employs 700 professionals. The nine regional Centres for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment employ about 600 professionals in the transport and infrastructure field; offers employment opportunities to approximately 12,000 persons a year.

7 www.liikennevirasto.fi Railway statistics The Finnish Transport Agency 7 The length of the Finnish railway network is 5,900 kilometres, of which about 50 % is electrified. On the main lines there are 3,359 level crossings and 43 tunnels. About 70 million journeys are made by train annually. 80 % of these are made by using commuter trains in the Helsinki region and 20 % by using long distance trains. Every year around 40 million tonnes of freight are carried by rail.

8 www.liikennevirasto.fi Road statistics The Finnish Transport Agency 8 Finland has approximately 78,000 km of highways, of which about 13,300 km are main roads. There are about 760 km motorways and approximately 5,600 km of pedestrian and bicycle routes. There are approximately 14,600 bridges. Road passenger transport amounts to 93 % and road freight transport to 68 % of all transports. 344 million tonnes of goods are carried by lorry.

9 www.liikennevirasto.fi Maritime statistics The Finnish Transport Agency 9 Finland has about 3,900 km of merchant shipping lanes. The coastal fairways total about 8,200 km and the inland waterways 8,000 km. In the fairways there are about 25,000 aids to navigation (lighthouses, buoys and spar buoys). There are about 41 lock canals in the fairway network, 8 of which in the Saimaa Canal. In Finland there are 23 ports that are kept open all year round. They handle about 80 % of the freight traffic.
