9  In the English-speaking traditions of Atlantic Canada, folk tales were rare. In the francophone tradition, however, folk and fairy tales thrived until recently. Some folk tales of the francophone areas were short, but many took hours to perform!  In many parts of Newfoundland and the Maritimes stories consisted of legends, anecdotes, and personal experiences. On the Port au Port Peninsula of western Newfoundland, however, the tradition was slightly different. In this and other francophone communities, fairy tales were typical. At one time, these fairy tales were considered strictly adult entertainment, because they contained gruesome details considered too horrific for children. Only as the tales declined in popularity in young adults, did writers and storytellers adapt the stories for young audiences and give them a literary rather than an oral style.

10  In Newfoundland’s francophone community folk tales are referred to as “les contest”, a name also used to describe the television soap operas that have become a large part of popular culture. The “soaps” tend to focus on romance, as do many folk tales.  Situation comedies, or “sit-coms”, also draw partly on the format of folk tales, using traditional themes such as the consequences of cleverness, foolishness, deception, seduction, and laziness.  While storytelling is not common, jokes are. In addition, we often hear modern legends. These are stories about ordinary people, often in urban settings, that describe events that could, in theory, happen. The setting of the legend often changes as the story circulates, so that its events occur in a familiar setting. You may have heard versions of legends such as “The Vanishing Hitchhiker” or “The Babysitter”.

11  Lucy Maude Montgomery is known worldwide, especially for her book Anne of Green Gables, first published in 1908. Montgomery wrote vividly about Prince Edward Island and its people, institutions, animals, plants, and weather, so that millions of readers have felt personally connected to her and, through her, to the island. Montgomery’s works were translated into many languages, and when she died in 1942, she had fans all over the world.  Through the decades. Montgomery's works have increase in popularity. Film, video, and television rights to the series The Road to Avonlea, based on several “Anne” novels, have been sold worldwide.  In result to this great success Anne has become an icon world wide and tourism has replaced fishing as P.E.I second largest industry.
