2 Why change our calendar?  Fencing  Is a contradictory sport (see survey) - Fascinating / One would like to try it - Old-fashioned / Incomprehensible «We all dreamed we were fencing!»  Competitions - Impossible to understand: Is it the rules? Is it the (difference between) the 3 weapons? Is it the game itself? Is it the refereeing? 2FFE

3  However There are extraordinary situations - spectacular actions - changes of score - close matches (30% of the matches 45/44 – 45/43) (31% of the matches 15/14 – 15/13)  But despite that - no media coverage - no sponsors (of very few) 3FFE

4  TODAY’S FENCING product  One sport, three weapons, men and women.  Rules – understood only by specialists.  A calendar: - Individual and team competitions. - World Cup and Grand Prix (what is the difference?). - The six weapons in different sites. - A relatively high cost for the nations. - Team competitions on neutral ground (except for the organising country). 4FFE

5 - Various organisations no uniformity, but more and more coherent spectacular progress made Conclusion The rules must evolve The organisations must get better But more importantly, the calendar must change 5FFE

6  The calendar Postulate 1)The competition is primarily made for the athlete. We must take into account the various periods: - preparation time - competitiontime - recovery time 6FFE

7 2)The competition system must answer the needs of all countries, small and large, poor and rich, on all continents. It must take into account: - the level of development of our sport - the financial means of everybody - the chance given to all to access the highest level 7FFE

8 3)A new calendar must provide: - a marketing opportunity to sponsors and television networks; - a greater media exposure; - new financial resources for the FIE, but also for organising federations. 8FFE

9  TOMORROW’S FENCING product The principle of the new calendar: - Separate individual and team events pros and cons - Fragment the season in three parts, each containing: Challengers Super Series Grand Prix6 individual weapons - Create a real Team World League complemented by a Continental League - Create a link with the World Championships and the OG qualification promotion and demotion system - Create a link with the Continental Championships 9FFE

23 Team simulation  Introduction:  The composition of the groups is according to the 2011/2012 season FIE ranking.  The World Group A is composed of the first 16 teams in the world (4 pools of 4).
