3 Dr. Anna Lobovikov-Katz -Technion – Israel Institute of Technology Abstract The Topic 1.1. What is cultural heritage? is the first and introductive topic to Module 1 “Values and Awareness“. This presentation is the first part of Topic 1.1. It explains what is cultural heritage, what are its categories. 8 Dr. A. Lobovikov-Katz, Arch. – Topic 1.1: What is cultural heritage ? – Part I Educational Linkage Approach In Cultural Heritage 1.1.1. General Introduction Slide 8 Cultural heritage comprises different types of “cultural products” produced as a result of human creative activity of different kinds, from arts and crafts to sophisticated technology. In the past, the term cultural heritage almost always meant buildings, or, as more commonly “historic monuments”. With time the term expanded to include more other types of heritage, also “intangible heritage” like theatre performance, music, dance, etc., as well as wider understanding of building, calling for attention to buildings’ immediate surroundings, and to wider concepts sometimes including whole historic quarter, town, village, landscape, etc.

What is cultural heritage ? – Part I Slide 13 The “intangible cultural heritage” means the practices, representations, expressions, knowledge, skills – as well as the instruments, objects, artefacts and cultural spaces associated therewith – that communities, groups and, in some cases, individuals recognize as part of their cultural heritage. This intangible cultural heritage, transmitted from generation to generation, is constantly recreated by communities and groups in response to their environment, their interaction with nature and their history, and provides them with a sense of identity and continuity, thus promoting respect for cultural diversity and human creativity. In this example in villa Foscarini (Rossi), Veneto, Italy painting is not only a physically integral part of the building (it is painted on the plaster of the walls and ceilings) but it is also part of the architectural space of the building, extending visually and “virtually” its interior (columns and other seemingly three-dimensional elements are actually painted on the ceiling).

37 Educational Linkage Approach In Cultural Heritage 1.1.2.2 Tangible Cultural Heritage Dr. A. Lobovikov-Katz, Arch. – Topic 1.1. What is cultural heritage ? – Part I Slide 37 Meeting of the modern (buildings) and the past is not always full of harmony. Often modern buildings are much larger in size then their small historic neighbours. We should not overlook even modest values of the past. A small building on the way home from school, half- hidden by huge modern buildings, might be also of a value – historical, architectural, or other... …like this building in a small street in Jerusalem, Israel, which is part of the historic neighbourhood of the 19 th century. By entering this street, one just walks into a totally different, human-size scale of the built environment of the past.
