This presentation is the first part of Topic 1.1. It explains what is cultural heritage, what are its categories. It explains and exemplifies what is tangible and intangible heritage, movable and immovable. It provides a basic introduction to the most widespread part of cultural heritage, which is the focus of ELAICH: built (or architectural) heritage – heritage which is around us, which is part of our everyday life. General Introduction Slide 8 Cultural heritage comprises different types of “cultural products” produced as a result of human creative activity of different kinds, from arts and crafts to sophisticated technology. In the past, the term cultural heritage almost always meant buildings, or, as more commonly “historic monuments”. With time the term expanded to include more other types of heritage, also “intangible heritage” like theatre performance, music, dance, etc., as well as wider understanding of building, calling for attention to buildings’ immediate surroundings, and to wider concepts sometimes including whole historic quarter, town, village, landscape, etc.

In this example in villa Foscarini (Rossi), Veneto, Italy painting is not only a physically integral part of the building (it is painted on the plaster of the walls and ceilings) but it is also part of the architectural space of the building, extending visually and “virtually” its interior (columns and other seemingly three-dimensional elements are actually painted on the ceiling).

A small building on the way home from school, half- hidden by huge modern buildings, might be also of a value – historical, architectural, or other... …like this building in a small street in Jerusalem, Israel, which is part of the historic neighbourhood of the 19 th century. By entering this street, one just walks into a totally different, human-size scale of the built environment of the past.
