Drawing in Florence Summer 2006

Every summer the Art Department of Central Michigan University offers Art 584 - Drawing in Florence which offers the opportunity for students to travel to Florence, Italy to create drawings in one of the most well preserved Renaissance cities.

Florence, known as the birthplace of Renaissance art and architecture, becomes an inspiration for work created "plein air" at various locations throughout the city- gardens, churches, museums, and the surrounding countryside.

This one-month class is limited to 10 students and allows for individual instruction and development of advanced level creative work. Along with drawing from observation throughout the city, students are encouraged to develop works that reflect their experiences of living in one of the world’s great centers of art and culture.

The class investigates some of the early interests and problems of the Renaissance such as linear and atmospheric perspective, chiaroscuro and the illusion of depth. Students study art and architecture in museums, churches and, seemingly, around every corner.

Students live and work in the center of Florence. Apartments are shared and their centralized location offers experiences of Florentine daily life and Italian culture. Food is bought at the market and meals are prepared by students in their apartment kitchen. Of course, Florence offers a wide range of eateries, trattorias and restaurants to explore and enjoy.

Excursions to such destinations as Siena, Arezzo, Venice and Rome include historic walking tours and museum visits. Students are introduced to a variety of art works and a broader sense of Italian history and culture.
