3 CEIBAL Data of Uruguay Population 3.3 Million Size 173.000 Km2 Dividided in 19 Areas 80% Urban 20% Rural Very strong Public School (85%). Alfabetization 97%. Total number of beneficiaries (children and teachers) 350.000

4 Pillars of Plan Ceibal Equality – All Children &Teachers in Public School get a Laptop Learning – New tools for learning, new contents, new forms of education. Teachers teach and learn, Kids teach and learn. Technology – Wireless Internet Connection in Schools, Public Places and many homes. Commitment – Strong leadership of President Vazquez. We will not only reduce the gap of the Digital Divide, but more important we need to eliminate the Knowledge Divide Plan CEIBAL

6 Plan CEIBAL 2008-2009 Pilot May 2007 Delivered until today 225.000 laptops, 1.250 servers, connectiity 86% To be delivered 2009, 165.000 laptops, 1000 severs, full connectivity Connectivity 300 mts maximum walk for internet (2010)

8  Preparing and training teachers is needed  Children teach the teachers  Parents get involved and want to be trained.  Teachers resistance is overcome once 1:1 starts  School is centre of life in town.  Collaboration in all aspects is natural in IT environment  Voluntary work is needed  New learning paradigm  Teacher motivation empowers project and new  ways to teach flourish What have we learned Plan CEIBAL

9 Activities of Children an Parents Usage for search of information at school and home Taking Pictures, Video, Music & Games Increase of children interaction using Chat. TV watching by children diminishes Sharing of the Laptop in the family

10 Impacts Homes with computers will grow by 220.000 (20%). Half ot them belong to the poorest 20% of the population. School attendance has grown, and class repetition has diminished very much. High motivation of teachers and children Parents participate actively in the School environment. Opportunities for the development in music, video, photograpy, programming, that without Ceibal would be almost null

11 Results are shown immediately Equal Opportunities for the future. New individual rights. Who should implement it?. Courage is needed to do it. Every year we dont do it, thousands of kids loose their rights. If we dont do it know, when should we do it?? Main Conclusions Plan CEIBAL
