2 Biography of Patrick V. Brady Patrick V. Brady is a Senior Scientist at Sandia National Laboratories and has authored or co-authored several dozen peer-reviewed journal articles, books, book chapters, and nine patents, in the fields of water treatment, contaminant chemistry, and climate change. He joined Sandia in 1993 and is also adjunct Assistant Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, Socorro, New Mexico (since 1998). Bachelors - Geology, University of California -Berkeley (1984); Ph.D. - Geochemistry, Northwestern (1990); Post-doc – Swiss Federal Institute of Technology; Water Research Institute, Dübendorf, Switzerland. Abstract Over the past 5 years, hydrofracturing of shales has changed the US from an importer to an exporter of natural gas; prompted an unprecedented increase in domestic oil production, and changed the geopolitical landscape for the US and many other countries. At the same time, hydrofracturing has triggered an outpouring of environmental concern, legislative scrutiny, and outright bans. This talk will address the following questions about hydrofracturing: 1. What are the key technical features and future bottlenecks; 2. Is it safe; 3. Is it sustainable; 4. What are its economic impacts, and 5. What does the future hold for it.

3 Biography of Hanwei Lei Hanwei Lei is a Sr. Scientist at Cabot Corporation for advanced battery technology and business development. Cabot is the largest manufacturer for carbon blacks, activated carbons, fumed silica, inkjet colorants and specialty oil-drilling-fluid in the world, and is actively developing new solutions for advanced energy technologies and applications. Dr. Lei is currently playing a leading role in Cabot's new energy materials business development and commercialization in AP region and travels frequently to China, Japan, Korea and Taiwan. After getting an electrochemistry Ph. D at Wuhan University in 1993, Dr. Lei went to Japan as a Special Fellow to work on electrocatalysis and related technologies in Hokkaido University and Yamanashi University for 4 years. Late 1997 Lei rejected the offer from Hokkaido University and returned to his former Wuhan University where he led a Chinese NSF fuel cell project as a PI and gave lectures on electrochemistry method for graduate students as an Associate Professor. Early 1999 Dr. Lei was invited to join IIT faculty in Chicago for the Combinatorial Catalyst Discovery Project funded by the DARPA. Since late 2000, Lei joined the US industry for fuel cell and battery technology development, and has been working as a PI and project manager in many programs funded by the US DOE, NSF, Army, NASA etc. Abstract New-energy-technologies and New- energy-vehicles are pushing battery technologies to the limits with advanced performance, improved safety and reduced cost. In this presentation, new trends for Li-ion and lead-acid batteries a, related challenges and opportunities will be reviewed first. Then, related to our daily life, some background information on how to safely use and handle batteries will be introduced so that even non- technical audience can learn some useful tips.

4 Driving Directions: 1. Take I-25 south to MLK exit. (after the intersection of I-25 and I-40) 2. Turn left on MLK Blvd. 3. Turn left on University Blvd. 4. Turn right on Tucker Rd. (north of Lomas) 5. After passing Yale Blvd, park your car in the M-Lot on the right side of Tucker and walk towards east to the Domenici Center on the corner of Stanford Dr. and Marble Ave. Note: The Domenici Center consists of two jointed buildings (Building# 200). The Auditorium is on the east side of the jointed building. See CIE/ACES-NM Albuquerque, New Mexico
