HBD Tasks Outline Thomas K Hemmick

New News  Second good QE result from Bob.  New quotes on reduced Glove Box:  $39,000 will not work (air lock too small).  $53,000 beautiful (building fleet of cadillacs)  Keys to cost reduction:  Purge not pump the air lock.  Reduce sizes to standard modules.  2-stations  Does not do all jobs at once.  First make cathodes  storage.  Second install cathodes in vessel.  Can we afford it?  Detailed reappraisal of steps/materials…new budget.

STAGE=Prep for Evap.  Step1: Load Au-GEMs into Evap Box.  Step2: Test electrical, dust (blow off)  Step3: Close Lid on Au-GEMs  Step4: Put Mesh/Normal GEMS  Pizza  Step5: Pizza  GloveBox…  Comments:  Use Laminar Flow Hood from Rich Lefferts.  Extras from WIS stay in WIS box/LFH.

STAGE=Prep for Evap.  Materials1: Clean wipes, alcohol, compressed gas, small tools, DVM, gloves  Materials2: Vacuum wire, connectors, Kwik-Connect feedthrough adapter.  Materials3: New GEM plate.  Materials4: Laminar Flow Hood, HEPA filters…  Materials5: Camera Viewing System.  Materials6: Pizza: minimum 12 pies.

STAGE=Set for Pumping  Step1: Evap Box  Evap.  Use rails on lift table to position.  Step2: Electrical connections made  Step3: Lid Lowers.  Step4: Grid replaced.  Step5: CsI chunks loaded.  Step6: Final electrical connections (continuity to feedthrough, floating from vessel)  Step7: Wipe clean and pump…

STAGE=Set for Pumping  Materials1: Flatten off the nubs.  Materials2: CsI chunks  Got lots more from Bob & Craig…  Enough CsI for a few hundred HBD’s  Materials3: Alcohol/wipes…  Materials4: Lift Table.  Materials5: Rails for Lift table.

STAGE=Evaporation  Steps as done so far…  Open to cryo few hours before.  Turn off heat ½-1 hour before.  Need to experiment w/ lower temp…45 o C?  Evap until samples gone.  Materials:  Just the CsI from the previous stage.

STAGE=Quantum Efficiency  Step1: Flow high purity N 2 at high rate ~1 hour before measurement.  Step2: Locate on 1 st GEM..  Step3-5: Tube Current, GEM current, Tube Current.  Repeat for all 4 GEMs.  No local tests on the Chicklets  Too many wires.  Too much complexity.  Bob measures these anyhow…

STAGE=Quantum Efficiency  Materials1: High purity N 2 gas  Materials2: Brand New Electronics:  Multi-channel (6) box.  Switch switches DVM pA always connected.  Good Cables everywhere.

STAGE=Transfer to GB  Step1: Close under Ar.  Step2: Remove Shield/Grid  Step3: Apply clamps.  Step4: Roll onto Lift Table.  Step5: Lock wheels.  Step6: Lower lift table.  Step7: Flip onto Transfer Table.  Evap Box uses wheels as pivot.  Step8: Roll into GloveBox on wheels.

STAGE=Transfer to Glove Box  Materials1: Lift table rails.  Materials2: Transfer table rails.  Materials3: Glove Box Rails.  Materials4: Wheel Locks (Flip and Slide)  Materials5: LN 2 for purges…bottle backup.  Materials6: Letup Ar (4.8) for Evaporator.  Materials7: Clean clothes for Bill  Materials8: Flow meters….misc plumbing.

STAGE=Gain Test  Step1: Remove GEMs from Evap Box.  Step2: Rejoin with mates from Pizza Box.  Step3: Remove Evap Box  to 1 st stage.  Step4: Gain test for each GEM stack.  Pump (WIS uses 12 hrs?) & Fill with CF4.  Turn up Voltage slowly watching scope.  Get reasonable sized signals, record voltage.  Wait one hour.  Step5: Repeat for all GEMs.  Step6: All Pizzas goto Vacuum storage.

STAGE=Gain Test  Materials1: CF 4 gas supply (UHP).  Materials2:  Oil Free Rough pump Long line + mol sieve.  Small turbo pump (needed, cost??)  Materials3: Plumbing (letup to N 2 ).  Materials4: Image intensified scope (CW)  Materials5: CF 4 regulator.  Materials6: 0-1 atm gauge.  Materials7: Feedthroughs, misc plumbing.  Materials8: Vacuum Storage (pumps&vessel)

STAGE=Assembly  Step1: Glovebox changeover to HBD…  Step2: Remove gain test stuff.  Step3: Put HBD&stand&walls inside.  Step4: Bring in pizza boxes.  Step5: GEM stacks  HBD body (2x6)  Step6: HV connections (touch w/ iron)  Step7: Close HBD.  Step8: Open Champagne.

STAGE=Assembly  Materials0: Glove Box  Materials1: HBD Vessel.  Materials2: Miscellaneous hardware.  Materials3: 2 sets of tools.  Materials4: Soldering irons/suckers.  Materials5: HEPA vacuum/air gun??  Materials6: Spotlights?  Materials7: DVM.  Materials8: Rotating Holder for HBD.  Materials9: Champagne.

Now for the costs  Detailed spreadsheet in separate post.  Totals for cost:  Life is rough for the good guys if we go with a new box.  New box would be better (old leaks badly no airlock).  Can we live with “OK” atm (as proposed by me previously) or can we afford the good box.  Stay tuned… PrepEvapQESTGGainGloveGrand 64506001150200095005400073700
