2. Definition: Sustainable Sanitation Sustainable sanitation systems protect and promote human health, minimise environmental degradation and depletion of the resource base, are technically and institutionally appropriate, socially acceptable and economically viable in the long term

4. Consideration and focus for EcoSanRes Consideration: Ecological sanitation systems have the potential to contribute significantly towards achieving sustainable sanitation. However ecological sanitation projects are not always sustainable for reasons relating to technology, finance, institutions, socio-economics or political economy. Focus: EcoSanRes 2 has one focus on understanding how ecological sanitation projects can be designed so that they achieve sustainable sanitation.
