What life would be like if we drop out of school….. What can we expect? Minimum wage $7.25 Written by Barbara Mackessy

Many people in the United States work at Minimum Wage especially in the south. $7.25

After High School in Georgia Several fast food restaurants and department stores will start you off at an hourly wage around $7.25 per hour. $7.25 x 40 hours = $290.00 per week $290.00 x 4 weeks = $1160.00 per month Lets go to the Mall! Oh Wait!!!

What about … Federal Income Tax 229.79y Georgia State Income Tax 281.30y Social Security 6.2% FICA/ Medicare 7.65 $88.74m This makes up about 8% of your check. $1160.00-taxes =1029.26 per month Now lets go to the Mall! Oh Wait!!!

What about bills? Electric Phone Cell Phone Natural gas Cable TV Water Sewer Renters insurance Car payment Parking fees Car tags Car insurance Car fuel Laundry mat Trash pickup Bank fee Credit cards Medical insurance Medical bills Dental Rent

Now lets go to the Mall! Oh wait!!! I need a second job.

Budget Project 50 pts. in Career Management Objective to see what it would be like if I dropped out or got stuck in a low paying job earning $7.25 or $7.50 per hour. Essential Question: Can I survive on my own in a low paying job in the future?

Pay check Gross pay Amount before taxes Net pay Amount after taxes The take home amount

Hourly wage Girls $7.25 per hour 40 hours per week Equals $290.00 Times 4 weeks Totals $1160.00 Minus taxes (approx. 8%) Boys $7.50 per hour 40 hours per week Equals $300.00 Times 4 weeks Totals $1200.00 Minus taxes (approx. 8%)

Why the difference? In 2007, women were paid only 77 cents for every dollar a man is paid, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.77 cents These figures are even worse for women of color. African American women earn only 72 cents and Latinas 60 cents for every dollar that men earn. Asian American and Pacific Islander American women earn less, too. Their pay inequality is less severe than for women as a whole, but they still earned only 88 cents for every dollar that men earned in 2000. The National Average Salary of women is lower than that of men. To make matters worse, the U.S. Supreme Court has made it harder for women to prove they are the victims of pay inequality. The High Court ruled in May 2007 that women who believe they are being denied equal pay must file suit within 180 days after the discrimination occurs.within 180 days

Who is working? More Wives Are Working For Pay In 2003, both parents were employed in 61 percent of two-parent families with children under 18. (U.S. Department of Labor Employment Characteristics of Families in Census 2010).U.S. Department of Labor Employment Characteristics of Families in More Mothers Are Working, Too Mothers are more likely to participate in the paid labor force than women without children. In 2003, nearly four in every five mothers of school-age children were in the paid workforce. Sixty percent of mothers with children younger than three were in the workforce. In comparison, in 1975, a little more than half of mothers with school-age children were in the workforce.

On the other side of gender: It is not uncommon for a high school student’s car insurance to equal or be more than the car payment for a male. National average: The male’s car insurance is more than the female’s.

Budget Project: You may share expenses with a fictitious roommate. In your budget you may individually use half of these costs: rent, phone, utilities.

Car Ad to get monthly car payment: Find car under $5000.00-look for calculate a payment (or finance or loan) on the car advertisement page in the AJC.com. Car fuel $50.00 per week x 4 weeks=200. Car Insurance 100.00 girls, 150. guys

Plus, any items from the handout list that you think you need-as long as you do not go over your budget. Make a list of your expenses for the month. See example below: Budget (add to make total of all together) Rent Car Gasoline Car insurance Food Clothing personal items Utilities - electric, water, garbage Phone-landline 30. or cell 59. or both 911 Internet 50. Cable 60.

Apartment Rent – Paste to your word document Newspaper Ad or Internet Ad for your local area. You may have a roomate to split the rent, and utilities.

Utilities Use figures from your handout sheet- these are a few: Electric $150.00 Phone $30.00 Cell 59.00 Water/Sewer $40.00 911 $1.60 Internet 50.00 You do not have to have ads for your utilities just list the amounts given on your worksheet. Health Insurance $101.00 (Teacher’s state insurance price for a single person)

Clothes One business casual outfit-under clothes expense Must include comfortable, but work related shoes This is in your budget because most of you have plenty of jeans, shorts tee shirts and tennis shoes but not enough dress clothes to wear to work each day. You would plan on buying one new outfit per month and then after a year you would have outfits so that you would not have to wear the same one each week.

Personal Items Must include all items that you use in a normal month. Sample list: Soap, shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, dental floss, toilet paper, paper towels, laundry soap, dish washing soap You must also include any longer term medications (ask your parents for the cost). Medical insurance-101.00 Laundry mat- cost to clean clothes-.75cents a load. Dryer is also.75 cents a load.

Food-list this one total as an item in your budget list. Add all breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, and drinks that you would need for a month. You may go to a grocery site and put items needed in a cart; then copy and paste that cart total to your Budget word document. Net Grocer. Com or usgrocer.com

Add car, rent, food, clothing, personal items and the amounts for other needs and wants listed on the sheet: TOTAL THESE.

Reflection Students must reflect and answer the questions on the budget project. The students must then write a persuasive paragraph to convince someone to stay in school and not drop out.

Stocking Apartment Project- separate project from the budget project (20 pts). Essential Question: What would it cost a person to move away from home, taking nothing with them in the future? There is NO money limit as with the Budget project, but buy as cheap as you can-you have had to save for this move. You must include the ad with the price for each item. Use online stores and put items in their cart to total easily. Add grand total of all items.

Include the following: Something to sleep on Something to eat on Something to sit on Cookware Silverware Dishes Glasses Shower curtain Towel Pillow Sheets Blanket or Quilt Dish cloth Smoke alarm Broom, mop, Dust pan Telephone You may include other items but must have the above in your project

Both projects These are two separate projects. They are not to be put together. Do not mix the items. You will not receive credit for an item that is placed in the wrong project. The budget includes items that you must pay for as you use them or pay each month. The stocking the apartment items can be reused. Do not put paper products in the stocking apartment: such as paper plates, paper cups etc. You may cut and paste the ads into your word document for this project. Save on my jump drive. These 2 projects (Budget (20pts)and Stocking (20Pts) are two separate grades.

Both projects are 20 pts each- reflection for Budget and St Apart. is 10 pts. Total. FIFTY TOTAL POINTS Good luck! I’m here after school each day if you need help. Calculators are available at school, if you want to use them. Make sure you include a grand total of each project.
