3 Baptism of Jesus

4 The baptism of Jesus Matthew 3.13-17 Mark 1.9-11 Luke 3.21-22
Summarize Important elements Mark Luke John

5 The baptism of Jesus Important Elements The beginning of the Gospel
Preceded by St John Baptist Blessed Trinity is present Words from the Voice Jesus answers St John Use of water St John’s title

6 The baptism of Jesus The baptism of Jesus is on his part the acceptance and inauguration of his mission as God's suffering Servant. He allows himself to be numbered among sinners; he is already "the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world".232 Already he is anticipating the "baptism" of his bloody death.233 Already he is coming to "fulfill all righteousness", that is, he is submitting himself entirely to his Father's will: out of love he consents to this baptism of death for the remission of our sins.234 The Father's voice responds to the Son's acceptance, proclaiming his entire delight in his Son.

7 The baptism of Jesus 235 The Spirit whom Jesus possessed in fullness from his conception comes to "rest on him".236 Jesus will be the source of the Spirit for all mankind. At his baptism "the heavens were opened” the heavens that Adam's sin had closed - and the waters were sanctified by the descent of Jesus and the Spirit, a prelude to the new creation.

Hail, holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, our life, our sweetness and our hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve; to thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us; and after this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

11 Assignment Read Workbook 6-10 Study Questions 3-4

12 The Temptation of Jesus

13 Due today Hand in Study Questions 3-4 Hand in Study Questions 5-13
Workbook 6-10 Any questions Worksheet answers

14 In the desert Why does Jesus go into the desert?
Who sends Him there? Why does it make sense that Jesus is tempted right after He is baptized? He’s just taken on our sins He’s on His way to the cross, which includes suffering for our sins What does Jesus’ temptation show you about your life in Him?

15 In the desert What does Jesus’ 40 day fast mirror?
Type, Antitype Complain about food; given bread Testing God; trying Moses’ patience Worships false god (golden calf) Tempted to eat bread; no complaint Tempted to test God Tempted to worship Satan Type Antitype

16 Fasting What does the number 40 represent
Patience, Waiting Preparation Repentance What was Jesus preparing for? Did He need to repent? Penance for our sins which He was carrying

17 Temptations When was Jesus tempted by Satan?
What temptations did He endure? For we have not a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sinning. How does Jesus’ temptation mirror the Fall of Adam & Eve? “Did God really say”? Now God invades Satan’s territory How did Jesus answer each temptation?

18 First temptation What was the first temptation?
Where is the lie in this temptation? “If you are the Son of God” God does not need to eat Is this temptation really about gluttony? It’s about self-sacrifice, obedience, focus What does Jesus’ answer to Satan mean? Depend upon God; He satisfies completely Jesus is “Word of God” and “bread from Heaven” How does Jesus do better than the children of Israel? It’s not all about food for the stomach

19 First temptation 12 “All things are lawful for me,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful for me,”[e] but I will not be enslaved by anything. 13 “Food is meant for the stomach and the stomach for food”—and God will destroy both one and the other. The body is not meant for immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. 14 And God raised the Lord and will also raise us up by his power. (1 Cor )

20 Second temptation What is the second temptation?
Where is the lie in this temptation? The angels will catch God? Misuse of Scripture to tempt/try/test God What is this temptation really about? Faith, trust Avoiding suffering What was the devil implying about Jesus’ suffering? Jesus need not suffer; suffering is meaningless What is Jesus’ answer to Satan?

21 Third temptation What was the third temptation?
Where is the lie in this temptation? Does the devil really have anything to give? Does Jesus not have all authority on earth? Is the temptation really about riches? Turning from His Father Doing His own will, not the Father’s will His kingdom is of this world What is Jesus’ answer to Satan?

22 Temptations What was the overriding idea behind all three temptations?
Jesus doesn’t need to suffer for sins; no need for the cross Not be who Jesus really is Do the disciples tempt Jesus just as the devil did? Read Matthew What is Peter afraid of? What is Peter’s “fallen” logic?

23 Temptations What was the temptation in the Garden?
Matthew What is Jesus’ response? How does Pilate tempt Jesus? Read John ; What is Pilate afraid of? What does Jesus understand about his mission that the devil, Peter and others do not?

24 Temptations What are the two ways the devil tempts people
Lie; deception Fear Fear of death What is the consequence of surrendering to the devil? Why is it called “mortal sin”? Examples: Judas, Peter How do we follow Jesus through temptation? Read Matthew ; Read Matthew 26.39

25 Due tomorrow Read Workbook 11-12

26 Trans-figuration of jesus

27 Transfiguration What is the Transfiguration of Jesus?
Read Luke Who are the main characters? Why Moses and Elijah? What did they talk with Jesus about? See also Luke Where is the Trinity in this story? How is this episode similar to the episode about Jesus’ baptism? What does this story show you about you?

28 Transfiguration What does it mean that Jesus “glowed”?
When is another time when Jesus is what as light or “glows”? What was the reaction of the disciples? Why were they scared? In the Transfiguration, Jesus manifests His divinity. Is this common in the Gospels? Generally, Jesus’ divinity is veiled by His humanity He “hides” His glory so that we are not overwhelmed

29 Jesus’ glory Why do you think Jesus did not “glow” or show His glory or divinity to others? Is Jesus here to “wow” us into believing in Him? Does He simply want to be our super hero? How did Jesus attract people without “glowing”? “20 And he closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant, and sat down; and the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. 21 And he began to say to them, “Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.” 22 And all spoke well of him, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth” (Lk 4)

30 Jesus’ Glory The Transfiguration is about Jesus showing His glory.
What is the ultimate sign of Christ’s glory? A few weeks before His arrest, Jesus said, “The hour has come for the Son of man to be glorified.” To what is Jesus referring? On the night He gave the Last Supper, Jesus said, “Now is the Son of man glorified, and in him God is glorified.” (Jn 13.31)

31 God’s Glory in You How does Jesus veil His divinity in the Sacraments?
Why? If we saw the “fire” that God is when we receive the Sacraments, we would not baptize our children or receive the Eucharist. What do we receive in the Eucharist? Body & Blood, Soul & Divinity What does this mean for us? Does God really live in us?

32 God’s glory in you The Eucharist creates an intimate union in your soul. The Lord actually lives or dwells in you. 23 Jesus said “If a man loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.”

33 Assignment Study Questions 14-21 Read 131-138 Workbook 13-17
Won’t collect this until Monday. So, Edgar, you can now do a really good job (and actually get it done!)  Read Workbook 13-17

34 new commandment What does God’s glory in you look like? How does it act? Read John What analogy does Jesus use talk about His glory living in you? What “fruit” does His glory in you produce? What is “my commandment”? How is it manifested? What example does Jesus give of the “new commandment?” Read John

35 New commandment The “new commandment” is really the old commandment, summarized in one word. What is that one word? Jesus said, “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

36 New commandment Jesus never asks us to do what He has not already done for us. Where do you see the “new commandment” in Jesus’ life? Does “lay down his life for his friends” refer to only one event in Jesus’ life? Jesus never asks us to do something without giving us the grace to do it. Where does Jesus give us the grace to fulfill the “new commandment”?

37 The last supper How was the Last Supper an anticipation of Christ’s Passion? What is the same in both? Why is the Eucharist God’s greatest gift to his Church and mankind? What is the Eucharist? Why is the Eucharist’s gift the greatest gift? Recall John What does the Eucharist give us the grace to do?

38 Christ’s passion and death

39 Agony in the garden Read Matthew 26.36-46
Context (day, time, before/after) What is the “Agony in the Garden”? What does Jesus do there? What do the disciples do? What happens physically to Jesus? Why? First Sorrowful Mystery Why is Jesus in agony in the Garden? “He Himself knew what was in man” What did Jesus pray for?

40 Agony in the garden What was “The Last Temptation”?
What does Jesus’ acceptance of the “cup” signify? How do we avoid temptation to shrink from taking up our cross (mortification of the flesh)? “Watch and pray”

41 Suffering servant Why is it appropriate to refer to Christ as a Suffering Servant? In what ways did Jesus suffer? Physically Psychologically Morally Read the following. Find the words that indicate the ways Jesus suffered.

42 Suffering Servant I am a worm and no man; scorned by men and despised by the people. All who see me mock at me. I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of join; my heart is like wax. I can count all my bones—they stare and gloat over me. He was despised and rejected by men; a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces. He was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities. He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth.

43 Suffering servant Why did Jesus suffer?
Consider these words: “No one takes [my life] from me, but I lay it down of my own accord.” What do these words imply? Free choice to suffer Control on when He will suffer How does Jesus show solidarity with those who are tempted? With those who suffer? How do we “offer up” our suffering to Jesus?

Workbook 19-24; 25-29

68 The Kenosis What does the word “Kenosis” mean?
ἐκένωσεν = aorist (past) tense of κενόω What does it mean that Jesus “emptied Himself”? How do these words talk about Jesus’ kenosis? “For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that by his poverty you might become rich.” (2 Cor 8.9)

69 The Kenosis Read Philippians 2.5-11 What is the humility of Christ?
Is it humiliating to be human? If not, what does St Paul mean? What is the other humbling that Christ undergoes? Does Jesus humble Himself willingly, or it is forced upon Him? What is the Father’s response to Jesus’ kenosis? What does “exalt” mean?

70 The Kenosis How do we “empty” ourselves?
Does the Father also lift up others (or us) when we empty ourselves? Read Luke Read 1 Sam 2.4-8 Luke Luke Luke

71 The Kenosis Did Christ ever use his divinity for his personal benefit?
What was the last act of Christ’s kenosis or emptying? How do the kenosis and the Resurrection relate to each other?

72 Freely & willingly IMPORTANT: Jesus willingly suffered, sacrificed Himself, emptied Himself and died. How do these words show that? “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as thou wilt.” “Father, into Your hands I commit My spirit.” “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. … For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life, that I may take it again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again; this charge I have received from my Father.”

73 Descent into Hades

74 The Lord’s Sabbath What day is the Sabbath day?
What did God the Father do on this day in the beginning? What did Jesus do on this day after His crucifixion? What is Hades? What is Sheol? What is the “bosom of Abraham”? How is “hell” (Gehenna) different from “hell” (Hades)?

75 Descended into hell What happens at death?
Did Jesus descend into hell in His body, or just with His soul? “For You will not leave my soul in hell, / Nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption” (Ps 16) Why did Jesus descend into hell? Read 1 Peter Answer 1: to proclaim the Gospel to the souls or spirits in hell Answer 2: to release the Old Testament saints

76 Descended into hell Why did Jesus descend into hell?
The Gospel was preached to the dead. Christ went down into the depths of death so that "the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live.”(CCC) The descent into hell brings the Gospel message of salvation to complete fulfilment. This is the last phase of Jesus' messianic mission. (CCC) The spread of Christ's redemptive work to all men of all times and all places, for all who are saved have been made sharers in the redemption. (CCC) Jesus did not descend into hell to deliver the damned, nor to destroy the hell of damnation, but to free the just who had gone before him. (CCC)

77 The Resurrection

78 He is risen! What is “The Resurrection” story?
Read Matthew Read Mark Read Luke Read John When did Jesus rise from the dead? What happened when He rose? Earthquake Stone rolled away Guards “like dead men”

79 He is risen! Who are the two men that spoke? What did they say?
Who heard the news first? What words did they remind the women of? What evidence did the angels show the women to demonstrate that Jesus was risen? Who did the women tell? What did they think about what they heard? What did Peter & John do to check out the women’s story?

80 He is Risen! What does it mean when we say that the Resurrection was an historical event? Real, truly happened Not a myth or fable or fiction Not a hope or wish based on hysteria Not a symbol of new beginnings or renewed strength

81 Jesus & Thomas

82 Recognizing Jesus What happens when people confront the Resurrection? What happens when the resurrected Jesus meets people? Read John Read Luke Read John Read John What do all these stories have in common? How do the people react to the Gospel, or to seeing Jesus? When do they recognize Jesus?

83 Recognizing Jesus How many people saw Jesus after He arose?
3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the scriptures, 5 and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. 6 Then he appeared to more than five hundred brethren at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep. 7 Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. 8 Last of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me.

84 Recognizing Jesus What did no one see concerning the Resurrection?
When How Where Jesus went How can we come to know the Lord? They told what had happened on the road, and how he was known to them in the breaking of the bread. (Lk 24) Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe.” (Jn 20)

85 Recognizing Jesus Where does the Lord make Himself available to us now? Eucharist – Body of Christ Church – Body of Christ How can the resurrected Lord be known and available to us? Because of His resurrection, Jesus transcends space and time. He walked through walls, and was instantly in one place or the next. In the same way, He can be with all in all times and places within His Body (Eucharist & Church).

86 Jesus Ordaining the apostles

87 The Significance of the resurrection
What is the Gospel? Gospel = Good News Why is the resurrection of Jesus important? Read 1 Cor Write the three most important points that St Paul makes Why must we believe in the Resurrection? See 1 Cor ; 17-19

88 The Significance of the resurrection
What event manifests the essence of the Gospel? For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the scriptures. (1 Cor ) Why is it important that Jesus appeared to so many people?

89 The Significance of the resurrection
Why must we confess that Jesus rose from the dead? If there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ has not been raised; if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain. (1 Cor ) What is our condition if Jesus did not rise? If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. If for this life only we have hoped in Christ, we are of all men most to be pitied. (1 Cor )

90 The Significance of the resurrection
What does it mean that Jesus is the “first fruits”? What does Jesus’ resurrection bring to humans? 1 Cor What does Jesus’ resurrection do to death and Satan? 1 Cor Who is the archetypical (model) human that demonstrates the benefit of Christ’s resurrection?

91 The Significance of the resurrection
So how must we see the resurrection of Jesus? HINT: Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down death by death, and upon those in the tombs bestowing life. (Eastern Easter hymn) Which persons manifest the greatest faith in the Resurrection?

92 The Significance of the resurrection
What is the first fruit or grace or benefit of the resurrection? Read John Why does Jesus breathe on the Apostles? What authority, right or power did Jesus give His Apostles? What are the exact words Jesus says? How are they changed from disciples to Apostles? What is an Apostle?

93 The Significance of the resurrection
Is there any sin that cannot be forgiven? Jesus said, “He who is not with me is against me, and he who does not gather with me scatters. Therefore I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. And whoever says a word against the Son of man will be forgiven; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.” (Mt ) What do these words mean?

94 The Significance of the resurrection
How is God’s forgiveness distributed or administered in the Church today? Which Sacraments in particular? Did Peter need to be forgiven? How was he forgiven? Read John Why does Jesus ask Peter three times if Peter loves Jesus? What shows that Jesus forgives Peter?

95 Assignment TEST ON THURSDAY (NOV 7) Read 154-158 (due Tuesday)
Workbook (due Tuesday) St Qu (due Tuesday) St Qu (due Wed) Vocab (due Wed)

96 Ascension & Pentecost

97 The ascension What is the Ascension?
What does the word “ascend” mean? Read Luke & Acts How many days after His Resurrection did Jesus ascend into heaven? What does “40” mean? What did Jesus do during the 40 days? Read Matt Read Mark When was Jesus’ body fully glorified? What event does the Ascension remind you of?

98 The ascension Why does it say that Jesus was “seated at the right hand of the Father”? What does this mean? What good is Jesus’ ascension for us? Just as all humanity was redeemed by Jesus’ death, and all humanity will be raised because of Jesus’ resurrection, we now have the hope of having our bodies glorified and living with the Father Jesus can now be everywhere, at all times and in all places, in the Eucharist

99 10 days What did the disciples “do” during the 10 days between Our Lord’s Ascension and the Descent of the Holy Spirit? Why? Read Acts Who was with them? What is a “novena”? What mission did Jesus give the Apostles before He ascended? Did they do this immediately, or did they wait a while? When will this mission be completed?

100 Pentecost What do we learn from the Apostles about being receptive (open) to the Holy Spirit? What do we need to be receptive? What is Pentecost? OT: Giving of the Ten Commandments (Decalogue) NT: Read Acts What alerted the Apostles & disciples to the presence of the Holy Spirit? What two things attracted the crowd? What was this crowd?
