3 What is ShakeOut? A national earthquake preparedness campaign Leads up to a nationwide earthquake drill at 9.26am on Wednesday 26 September 2012.

4 Where did the idea come from? Based on the highly successful Great California ShakeOut - now an annual event involving over 8 million people West Coast had its own ShakeOut in 2009 involving 8,300 people Now spreading to other US states and to Canada, New Zealand and Japan.

5 Why now? The National Exercise Programme provided for an earthquake exercise in 2012 ShakeOut brand provides a proven platform Opportunity to learn from Canterbury Build on earthquake awareness and to help people know the right actions to take in an earthquake.

6 Aim Everyone who participates in New Zealand ShakeOut is better prepared to ‘Get Thru’ an earthquake. Partnering with the Ministry’s successful Get Ready Get Thru public education programme.

7 ShakeOut & Get Ready Get Thru Get Ready Week 23-29 September 2012 Focus on ShakeOut and earthquake preparedness in the build-up Intensified mass media advertising in September New earthquake specific TV and radio advertising, online and printed resources.

8 Objectives People throughout New Zealand understand the right actions to take in an earthquake. To promote earthquake planning and discussion by individuals, families and organisations in the lead up to 26 September 2012.

9 Objectives continued To have one million people participate in the ‘drop, cover and hold’ drill at 9:26am on 26 September 2012. To provide targeted resources and activities enabling varying levels of participation.

10 How will it work? Register on the ShakeOut website Participate in the Drop, Cover and Hold drill Take it even further – conduct an evacuation, practice your business continuity or family plan...various options available.

11 Comms/Marketing Strategy Focal point is dedicated ShakeOut website Support ‘Toolbox’ is provided with a range of resources to customise as needed MCDEM is leading a multi-media campaign using news media, civil defence networks, paid advertising, social media and other communication networks.

12 Delivery at the local level Use the Planning Guide provided Sample Organisational Memo provided EMO Checklist provided Engage through H & S and Comms & Marketing structures use existing resources to supplement engage with your communities to promote ShakeOut.

13 Audience All people in New Zealand Categories created that people can identify with, and find specific information on how to participate.

14 What to do now Programme designed to build up to 26/9 @ 9:26 Think about how you can connect with customers, clients and communities to promote New Zealand ShakeOut. Currently 87,000 registered –4,062 in the Waikato Group Area (Region)
