2 Ryan has learned that his friend Spencer smokes cigars and uses smokeless tobacco. Spencer tells Ryan that this is not as bad as smoking cigarettes. What facts might you suggest that Ryan share with Spencer to convince him that tobacco use is still harmful? All tobacco products contain nicotine, which is the addictive chemical in tobacco. It speeds up your heart and raises your blood pressure. It also causes dizziness, upset stomach, and reduces the amount of oxygen to the brain. All forms of tobacco can cause cancer, risk of stroke, and heart disease. There is no safe use of tobacco.

3 Which of the health risks associated with tobacco use do you consider the most serious? Explain your answer. Cancer- (Lung, lip, bladder, kidney, mouth, esophogeal, etc.) Heart Disease Stroke Weakened immune system Bronchitis Emphysema

4 Why do you think it is important for a teen to never try tobacco? The statistics say that a teen has a 50% chance of continuing to smoke after the first cigarette. If a teen starts to use tobacco at an early age, then the have a higher risk of becoming a regular tobacco user. Also the teen years are an important part of growth and development. Starting to use tobacco will hinder this growth.

5 Pick a system of the body, and describe the ways in which smoking harms it. Respiratory System- Tobacco smoke releases tar, which damages the alveoli, which results in less oxygen to your body. Emphysema can occur. You risk lung cancer if you continue to smoke.

Circulatory System- As nicotine enters the blood stream, vessels constrict, and over time these vessels can harden. There is not enough oxygen carried to the body parts that need this oxygen. Blood pressure rises and heart rate speeds up which increases chance of stroke, heart attack and heart disease.

Nervous system- When you smoke, carbon monoxide is released in the smoke. This carbon monoxide cuts down on the amount of oxygen reaching the brain.

Digestive System Smoking can cause mouth and stomach ulcers, which are painful sores. When this happens, these smokers may not be able to eat certain foods, which harms their nutrition. Smoking also harms teeth and gums, which lead to more cavities and gum disease.

Excretory system Smokers are more likely to develop bladder cancer. The chemicals from smoke get into the blood stream and are then filtered by the kidneys. The kidneys put these chemicals into the bladder, which increases the chance of bladder cancer. Colorectal cancer is also a possibility.

6 What effects of tobacco use that is non-life threatening do you think is the worst? Why? Cravings Taste and appetite Bad breath Cold hands and feet Dizziness Yellow teeth Smelly hair, clothes and skin Premature aging
