2 Budget 2007 to 2013: total 623 million € (last political agreement). This call 130.5 miljoner €. Evaluation procedure: single stage evaluation (so far). Structured along issues and challenges, not along disciplines. Timetable: Official call planned for July 2009. Closure (December) February. Calls published on europaprogrammen.se. No of topics for this call: 17 whereas 5 challenges/BB. Ljubljana process: Grand challenges and Great ideas.

3 Statistics call 1 - SSH Ist call: 54 projects (?) 1 Swedish coordinator. UK, 28 participants, 13%. Sverige no 8 with 11 participants, 4.65% (of participations), 4.10% (of contracting funds).

4 Statistics Call 2 - SSH 170 experts from 23 member states and 5 associated countries evaluated the proposals. 10 from third country. Gender balance 43% female, 57% male. 482 proposals received and 467 were fully evaluated. 227/467 passed the threshold. Call 2009A: Collaborative projects, one Research for the Benefit of Specific Groups. 20 topics in 7 activities. Call 2009B: Collaborative projects dedicated to international cooperation. 2 topics in 2 activities. Call 2009C: Coordination and support actions. 4 topics in 4 activities.

6 Challenges / Building blocks (BB) Metris report – emerging trends in SSH in Europe. Road map 2010-2013. Preparing the path for FP8. Structure ERA by linking disciplines. MS to give Commission better feeding policy making through research, foresight and dissemination. Bigger grip on large issues. Both vertical and horisontal work programmes. One project (and contract) between 6.5-10 M€, 4-5 years to combine a group of research activities and other activities (foresight, coordination, management, dissemination). Professionalisation of management. Coordinator needs to have sufficient time and resources. Full-time staff. Probably around15 participants depending on Challenge. 4 regional info events in the autumn. Transnational. Brokerage events.

Area 8.1.2 Structural changes in the European knowledge economy and society Changing the role of the financial system to better serve economic, social and environmental objectives. (Challenge/BB) Area 8.1.3 Strengthening policy coherence and coordination in Europe The public sector of the future.

9 Area 8.2.1 Socio-economic development trajectories Creating and adapting jobs in Europe in a context of the socio-ecological transition (Challenge/BB). Local welfare systems favouring social cohesion. Analysis of the impacts of global changes. Social Platform on Sustainable Lifestyles. Quantification of climate change impact on economic sectors in the Arctic (joint call). Area 8.2.2 Regional, territorial and social cohesion EU regions and their interaction with the neighbourhood regions.

(Challenge/BB) Area 8.5.2 Diversities and commonalities in Europe European Identities: Inner and outer perceptions of Europe and the EU. Reinterpreting Europe’s cultural heritage: towards the 21st century library and museum.

12 At last some more points Less deliverables. Research should have multidisciplinary views and meet the challenge from different angles. Each challenge addressed by a specific set of research actions. Size is important. Big is possible. RECON (FP6) – reconstituting democracy in Europe (IP). If not all issues covered. Clarify and explain why. Management: I have done it before (successfully). Evaluators make a ”risk analysis”. Net4Society.

13 Evaluations/hearings Co-ordinators whose proposals have passed the thresholds are invited to Brussels. Intended to clarify any points raised by the experts in advance.Not an occasion to ”improve” the proposal. Evaluation of C/BB: aims at least 5 evaluators with at least one generalist and/or research management specialist. Organised hearings, which would lead to Panel review in two steps (1: preliminary ranking and formulating questions 2: finalise ESR, score and ranking – 3 weeks later).
