1 Prepositions A preposition is a word that shows the relationship between a noun or a pronoun and another word in the sentence.

2 Prepositions Using the list of prepositions handout, select two words that can fill in the blanks. 1. The narrow road ran_____/____the cliffs. 2. A huge boulder was lying _____/______the path. 3. The scouts camped ______/______ the lake. 4. I found my watch _____/_____the stream.

4 Prepositions Some prepositions are made up of two or more words. These are called “compound prepositions”. For example: According to the rules, you won the game. In spite of the weather, we went camping.

5 Prepositional Phrases A prepositional phrase is comprised of the following formula: A prepositional phrase is comprised of the following formula: Preposition + [optional adjective(s)] + noun or pronoun The noun or pronoun is called the “object of the preposition”.

6 Examples In July, the creek is often dry. “in” is the preposition, there are no adjectives, and “July” is the object of the preposition. Lee came with us. “with” is the preposition, there are no adjectives, and “us” is the object of the preposition.

7 Prepositional Phrases Put the tractor inside the small barn. “inside” is the preposition, “the” and “small” are adjectives, and “barn” is the object of the preposition.

8 Prepositional Phrases Some sentences may include more than one prepositional phrase. The tulips in our garden usually bloom around May. After dinner we went to the library.

9 Prepositional Phrases AN OBJECT OF THE PREPOSITION CANNOT BE THE SUBJECT OF A SENTENCE. After lunch we went shopping.

11 Prepositional Phrases Label the subject, verb, preposition and the object of the preposition in this sentence. Under the table the cat slept.
