7 Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel The University Hospital of Schleswig-Holstein which is run as an independent unit is the largest medical centre available to the population within the federal state of Schleswig-Holstein. It provides work for just under 10,000 employees. The Hospital and the Medical Faculties at the Universities of Kiel and Lübeck collaborate closely in the setting up of research networks and research focuses. Winner of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, Eduard Buchner ( ): Discovered non-cellular fermentation, for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in Otto Diels ( ): After the Second World War he re- established the Institute for Chemistry of Kiel University, and was its Director for several decades (Nobel Prize with Alder in 1950). Johann Friedrich August von Esmarch ( ): Surgeon, specialist in the treatment of accident injuries, co-founder of First Aid in Germany. He received many honours and distinctions.
