“Successfully embedding CPD in the daily life of schools would make more difference than anything else to the quality of education.” The key is to put training and teacher peer learning at the centre of school life…the school becomes a place of learning for the staff as well as the students.” Dylan Wiliam, Emeritus Professor at the Institute of Education, London

2 The 6 Domains of Teaching & Learning

3 Learning Objectives To:  further contextualise CPD within the school  set out the 6 Domains of Teaching & Learning  clarify why and how we will focus on them this year Success Criteria I can… List the 6 Domains Explain why we are focusing on them See how the internal CPD workshops are organised (this week and during terms 1 & 2)

CPD DIS strategic plans (3) year/annual CPD & school improvement HOD/Team Leader role Individual teacher responsibility “The key is to put training and teacher peer learning at the centre of school life…”

DIS’s professional development needs feature in the 2012-2015 Strategic Plan and yearly Action Plan - including CPD focus on:  In-house voluntary CPD programme (led by teachers)  Middle Management CPD programme  Term 1 induction programme for new teachers  Training support for Emirati teachers (Zayed University scheme)  More training for teachers in the use assessment for learning, feedback, independent learning, differentiation and critical thinking skills  Appraisal System support  Assessment data training (CEMS)  Database for staff CPD records  Logging of 30 hours of CPD and 2 lesson observations DIS strategic plans

6 1.Learning Challenges/Objectives & Success Criteria (AfL) 2.Challenge and Pace 3.Enquiry-based Learning 4.Differentiation 5.Questioning Techniques 6.Independent Learning  The 6 Domains of Teaching & Learning All of these topics have been on the DIS Strategic Plan since Jeff’s arrival. Developing our understanding of these 6 Domains will enhance further the quality of our classroom teaching and learning by helping to shift the balance from teacher-centred to student-centred learning.

7 KHDA Lesson Observations February 2014 OutstandingGoodAcceptable Unacceptable 20%50%30% 0% KHDA catalyst… February 2014 “Where lessons lacked pace, students were passive and did not take responsibility to move their learning forward but waited to be led by the teacher.”

LEARNING SKILLS: Students…  show responsibility for their own learning  interact with each other and collaborate  apply learning to the real world  make connections between areas of learning  demonstrate high enquiry, research and critical thinking skills, including use of technology Outstanding Students are independent, reflective learners. They find things out from a variety of different sources and use technology effectively to support their learning. Critical thinking skills are an intrinsic part of learning. Good  Most students find things out for themselves and use technology to support their learning. Critical thinking skills are a common feature of learning KHDA Inspection Handbook

10 August INSET week Repeat-content workshops will Domains 1-2-3 (initial workshop) will be delivered to all staff during this week. (‘Print screen’ of programme)

Follow-up workshops on Domains 1-2-3 will be run during the first eight weeks of term as part of the internal CPD programme. (‘Print screen’ of programme)

12 Domains 4-5-6: we move on to Domains 4-5-6 with initial presentations during the whole school Inset day, 16 th November. Follow up workshops take place in the rest of term 1 and into term 2 (‘Print screen’ of programme)

Inquiry Levels Student-centred Learning: what is this? Student-centred learning puts more responsibility on the pupils for their own learning. It involves them in more decision-making processes; they learn by doing, rather than just by listening and studying theoretical things which are often not in context and therefore ‘unreal’ to them. Rogers 2008 We recognise that there is MUCH of this happening already, but we still need more and KHDA are certainly looking for and expecting more…

14  T & L Steering Group (+ a range of support people) who will be presenting this week. This is NOT about…  Any of these Presenters “telling” others how to teach.  Nor about these colleagues pretending to be “experts” in anything. The 6 Domains of Teaching & Learning

15 It IS about… Sharing robust research done on behalf of us all. Collaborating to help drive the school forwards. Provoking thoughts that may result in some changes to our teaching practices in recognition that “Shift Happens…” Whilst we may feel we are doing much of this already, those KHDA stats suggest we still need to be better and/or smarter at it… Even those know plenty about any of the topics in question can still sharpen their practices further. As such, please keep an open mind as you attend these sessions and look for the opportunity to pick up more tips. The 6 Domains of Teaching & Learning

16 KHDA inspectors have made it clear (in both verbal and written feedback) that they wish to see more student-centred activity lessons. As such:  Staff to be asked to attend initial presentations this week  Plus the follow-up workshops on the 6 Domains that run during term’s 1 & 2 (= 6 workshops & 6 CPD hours logged).  During inspection week itself, much less ‘teacher centred’ activity is anticipated. 6 Domains: what expectations?

17 All of the Monitoring & Evaluation conducted over the next two terms will looking for evidence of the 6 Domains in the teaching and learning around the school: Departmental and Year Group monitoring Let’s Share Walks SLT Learning Walks Lesson Observations KHDA Inspection SLT, HODs, Phase Leaders, HOYs will be looking for all staff to include aspects of the 6 Domains into their planning and weekly teaching. 6 Domains: M & E

18 This is a wonderful opportunity for us all to move DIS forward as a body of staff. Yes, this will help greatly in our search to become an outstanding school. But, fundamentally, this is NOT about inspection week… ….this is about us all being part of a learning community and seeking to become ever-sharper classroom practioners. Most importantly, the biggest winners here are the people who matter most in our job: OUR CHILDREN Forever learning, forever achieving Whole School Opportunity

19 Thank you for your attention... Any comments or questions, please?

Why does this matter? Robust research by the 21 st Century Learning Initiative concludes that school leavers need to be: Flexible learners Team players Independent thinkers Confident individuals Creative and innovative And concludes that… Schools need to “provide learners both with a platform for employability in the 21 st century and with lifelong learning capabilities.” (www.21learn.org/) http://vimeo.com/58839986
