64 64 Lighthouse School Criteria Recommended steps to becoming a Lighthouse School Champion Team A Champion Team is in place and has established a process for providing ongoing implementation support and introducing new staff and students to the leadership model. Choose a Champion Team. Provide the Champion Team with training and tools to help them form and implement a few key initiatives focused on engaging students, staff, parents, and community member in the school's leadership model. Leadership Environment School environment reinforces the leadership model. Add leadership language to displays and bulletin boards in hallways and classrooms. Incorporate music, art, and media into the school and campus environment that reinforce individual worth and leadership principles. Integrated Instruction Teachers are integrating leadership language into curriculum and instruction daily. Identify literature you teach that illustrates each of the 7 Habits. When developing lesson plans around core curriculum, consider teachable moments for reinforcing leadership language. Examples: Visit www.TheLeaderInMe.org or reference The Leader in Me activity guides for lesson plan ideas and book lists. Student Leadership Roles Students are provided with meaningful leadership roles and responsibilities. Create titles and positions for students using the word "leader", (e.g. "Leaders of Technology") that allow students to develop skills vital to the 21 st century. Allow students to participate in school decisions such as planning activities or hiring staff. Becoming a Lighthouse School

65 65 Becoming a Lighthouse School Lighthouse School Criteria Recommended steps to becoming a Lighthouse School Parent Involvement Parents are involved in activities that support the leadership model and have an understanding of the common language being used at the school. Send a letter home to parents along with a copy of The Leader in Me Parent's Guide to introduce the leadership model. Offer The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Families training to parents at the school. Goals and Tracking A system is in place for setting and tracking classroom, academic, and personal goals. Ask each classroom to create and post a Class Mission Statement. Equip students with a data notebook to set and track academic and personal goals. Measurable Results School is seeing measurable improvements as a result of implementing The Leader in Me process. Choose what you wish to measure and collect baseline data. Example: Discipline Referrals, Academic Achievement, Staff and/or Parent Satisfaction. Track data you have chosen to measure at the beginning and end of each school year. Leadership Events School is holding events to share their leadership model with the community and other schools. Have students greet visitors to the school warmly and with eye contact. Hold a Leadership Day. Invite parents, community members, business partners, and educators from other schools to come learn about and see your school's unique leadership model.
