1 Define each of the following: Non Characteristic Properties AND Characteristic Properties
Determine whether each of the following properties of matter are non – characteristic properties OR characteristic properties. Make sure to explain your reasoning for each: 1.Mass 2.Density 3.State of matter 4.Volume 5.Concentration 6.Solubility 7.Phase change points

2 Mass , Volume and Concentration
Can you tell what a substance is by a measurement of it’s mass, volume or concentration?

3 Mass, Volume and Concentration NON CHARACTERISTIC PROPERTIES
These are properties of matter that tell us about the amount of a substance we have but they cannot be used to identify a substance. For ex: 1 Kg of Feathers and 1Kg of bricks (same mass DIFFERENT substances) 1 L of Molasses and 1L of Air (same volume DIFFERENT substances) 26 g/L Koolaide and 100 g/L of Koolaide (different concentration SAME substance) 5 g/L antibiotic solution and 5 g/L orange juice (same concentration DIFFERENT substances)

4 States of Matter NON CHARACTERISTIC PROPERTIES
Can you tell what a substance is by its state of matter (solid, liquid or gas)?

5 State of Matter (solid, liquid or gas)
All substances have a solid, liquid and gaseous phase, so the state of matter that you find a substance in cannot help you identify a substance. For Ex: Liquid Mercury and Liquid Water

6 Water (left) Mercury (right)

7 Density and Solubility
Each substance has its own density. Each substance has its own solubility given the solvent. Remember that solubility must take into consideration two different substances (the solute and the solvent) Therefore we CAN identify substances based on their densities or their solubilities.

8

9 Phase Change Points

10

11 Phase Change Points Each substance has a specific temperature for its boiling point, point of condensation, melting point and freezing point. Therefore we can identify substances based on the temperatures of their phase change points. Note: the melting point is the same temperature as the freezing point. The point of condensation is the same temperature as the boiling point.

12 Draw the heating OR cooling curves for the following substances

13 Silver freezing point: 961 C point of condensaion: C 13

14 Mercury Melting point: -39 C Boiling point: 357 C 14

15 (Draw the heating and cooling curves for this)
Chlorine (Draw the heating and cooling curves for this) Melting point: - 102 Boiling point: - 35 15

16 Identify each of the following substances based on their heating and cooling curves.
