Part 1 The “4” R’s

The “4” R’s Reduce Reduce The best way to manage waste is to not produce it. This can be done by shopping carefully and being aware of a few guidelines: 1. At work, make two-sided copies when ever possible. 2. Buy durable goods - ones that are well-built or that carry good warranties. They will last longer, save money in the long run and save landfill space. 3. Use cloth napkins instead of paper napkins. 4. Use a dish cloth instead of paper towels. http://www.dnr.mo.gov/env/swmp/pubs-reports/threers.htm

The “4” R’s Reuse Reuse It makes economic and environmental sense to reuse products. Sometimes it takes creativity: 1. Use resalable containers rather than plastic wrap. 2. Use a ceramic coffee mug instead of paper cups. 3. Reuse grocery bags or bring your own cloth bags to the store. Do not take a bag from the store unless you need one. http://www.dnr.mo.gov/env/swmp/pubs- reports/threers.htm

The “4” R’s Recycle Recycle Recycling is a series of steps that takes a used material and processes, remanufactures, and sells it as a new product. Begin recycling at home and at work: 1. Speak to store managers and ask for products and packaging that help cut down on waste, such as recycled products and products that are not over packaged. 2. Buy products made from material that is collected for recycling in your community. 3. Use recycled paper for letterhead, copier paper and newsletters. http://www.dnr.mo.gov/env/swmp/pubs-reports/threers.htm

The “4” R’s Remove Remove Removing waste and litter from public and private areas can prevent: 1. Animals thinking they are food and eat them. 2. Waste can seep into ground water and intoxicate plants, animals, and humans. 3. Removing food scraps from roads can prevent animals coming to eat it, getting hit by a car, other animals coming to eat the dead body and they get hit by a car, and the “Cycle of Roadside Food Scraps” will continue.

*** PSA Why is protecting the environment important? ***  Protecting the environment is important because the environment is the main basic of our survival. We get food, water, air, clothing, energy, shelter, and other needs from the environment. Destroying the environment is like destroying our chance of survival.

*** PSA The two actions you can take ***  Two actions that you should take to ensure a healthier world is to reduce, reuse, and recycle as much as you can. Also, you can try to evolve others into reducing, reusing, and recycling.
