Effective Study Guidance

Effective Study

Effective study combine three components: –Skill: Knowledge about self and learning strategies – Will - personal goals, motivation and coping with stress –Self-management - effectively managing your learning

Study Skills: Self As Learner You need to find out about yourself as a learner –what approach you take to your study. –what ways you learn best. How do I learn Best? –Individuals tend to have a preferred learning style, the VARK questionnaire allows you to access this.

Memory and Understanding We will look at how memory works, and it will also cover strategies for improving your memory and understanding.

Memory Memory and how it works: Attention: Taking the information in Encoding: Formatting the information for use by the brain Storing: Maintenance or retention of the information Retrieving: Bringing forth the information to be used

Memory Memorisation is about reproducing information while understanding is about being able to remember information so that you can build meaning, seek relevance, and discover relationships and applications. There are learning strategies that help you process information and remember (encode, store and retrieve).

Memorising Strategies Pegwords Linkwords Acrostics Flash Cards Underlining and Highlighting

Rehearsal Strategies - Mnemonics - Pegwords A pegword is a word that is connected to another word in some way eg. By rhyme. The pegword is a word that you can visualise in your mind. People are generally better at remembering images than words.

Example of Using Pegwords One = bun Two = shoe ect. 186000 is the speed of light per second. The crazy image with lots of action will be easier to remember.

Rehearsal Strategies - Mnemonics - Linkwords Linkwords can be of use for those learning a foreign language. In this case try to form a link between a new word or term in a foreign language and a familiar word. E.G.: nappe is the french word for tablecloth - so imagine taking a nap on a tablecloth. Can you think of an example of a linkword that you can use?

Mnemonics/Acrostics Devise a sentence in which the first letters of each of the words in the sentence compose the starting point for items to be remembered. Can anyone remember a mnemonic for the colours of the rainbow?

Flash Cards Write a question on one side of the flash and the answer on the other side. This allows for quick and easy revision.

Underlining or Highlighting Highlighting and underlining focuses the mind and allows students to know what the most important components are on a text. However students need to engage with the text. It is a good idea to write a key word or phrase in the margin. Or at the end write a summary of the text that you have read.

Underlining or highlighting

Steps for summerising Skim the text and gain the general impression of the information. Re-read the text will taking notes. Cover the text and rewrite your notes in your own words. Compare these notes to the original text to see if you haven’t left anything out.

Teaching and Discussion Teaching or discussion a topic is one of the most effective forms of revision. This is because you have to know topics and content inside out in order to teach them.

Diagramming

Reading To get an overview or the gist of a topic To determine if more concentrated reading is necessary To summarise main points To understand material To critique or evaluate To enjoy for leisure

Reading Rates Purpose Reading Rate To read for an overview of a chapter Fast/Scan To identify main ideas so you can explain them. Slowly Identify Specific Information Fast and then slow. To gain detailed critical understanding Slowly underlining and taking notes.

SQ3R Method Survey: Scan the piece: A basic idea Question: Question yourself about the piece. Read: Read Actively Answering Questions Record: Takes notes or Recite Review: Is there any unanswered questions.

Goal Setting Goals or objectives: –Help us to focus on what we need to do. –help us to keep in control of what we need to do. –help us to keep motivated to succeed in what we need to do.

S.M.A.R.T S = SpecificThe more specific the goal, the more likely it will be achieved M = MeasurableThis helps you to keep track of your progress (monitoring). So use numbers and times. A = Achievable It is important that your goals can be made realised. If in doubt check with someone else.

S.M.A.R.T Resourced In order to achieve your goals you need the corrrect resources. No use in going to study without your study materials. T = Time based We tend to use deadlines to create pressure. Make realistic time frames for your work. Building realistic committments and deadlines into your study is good.

Which one of these is a S.M.A.R.T objective I will study history tonight from 7 - 9 pm Maths chapter 1 and exercise 4 between 6-10 pm. I will read a couple of chapters, between 3 - 5 pm My goal for the next hour is to read and highlight my lecture notes from todays lectures.
