Where are we now? Since 1991 we have been using Priority Academic Student Skills PASS Objectives

What is a PASS Objective Example: 8 th grade Objective Central Tendency: Find the measures of central tendency (mean, median, mode, and range) of a set of data and understand why a specific measure provides the most useful information in a given context.

PASS: Central Tendency Find the mean of the following numbers: 2.4, 5.3, 6.2, 7, 1.5, 5.3 A) 5.3 C)4.61 B) 27.7 D) 7

What Do Common Core State Standards Look Like? Example: Central Tendency 6 th Grade. Develop understanding of statistical variability. Recognize that a measure of center for a numerical data set summarizes all of its values with a single number, while a measure of variation describes how its values vary with a single number.

Example: Our school has to select a girl for the long jump at the regional championship. Three girls are in contention. We have a school jump- off. Their results, in meters, are given in the accompanying table.

AmyMikiAisha 3.253.553.67 3.953.883.78 4.283.613.92 2.953.973.62 3.663.753.85 3.813.593.73 Table 3: Data from the jump-off: distances are given in meters. John says, “Aisha has the longest average. She should go to the championship.” Do you think John is right? Explain your reasoning.

All we hear about are test scores? Why?

Waiver filed for No Child Left Behind November 2011 What Does the Waiver Change?

A-F Grading System  33% test scores  All tests, not just reading and language arts  17% learning gains in reading and math  17% improvement of lowest 25% in reading/math  33% whole school improvement Differentiated Recognition, Accountability, and Support

Mathematics and Reading Index 50%: Performance Component ◦3 points for Proficient or Advanced ◦2 points for Limited Knowledge ◦1 point for Unsatisfactory 25%: Growth Component ◦Compare this year’s test to last year’s ◦1 point if proficient in both years ◦1 point for advancing to the next category 25%: Growth of bottom 25% ◦Same as growth component, but counted again for the students in the bottom 25%
