BCPS Curriculum 7th Grade Health Unit 1: Social Skills Lesson 3: What is a family? Objective: Students will develop an understanding of positive family characteristics by examining the similarities and differences of family structures. Maryland State Curriculum MSDE Standard: 4.0. Family Life and Human Sexuality – Students will demonstrate the ability to use human development knowledge, social skills, and health enhancing strategies to promote positive relationships and health growth and development throughout the life cycle. MSDE Indicator: 4.7.D.1. Examine the elements that contribute to family structure. Common Core State Standards Reading: 1. Read closely to determine what the text says explicitly and to make logical inferences from it; cite specific textual evidence when writing or speaking to support conclusions drawn from the text. Writing: 7. Conduct short as well as more sustained research projects based on focused questions, demonstrating understanding of the subject under investigation. Standards for the 21st Century Learner Read, view, and listen for information presented in any format (e.g. textual, visual, media, digital) in order to make inferences and gather meaning Use strategies to draw conclusions from information and apply knowledge to curricular areas, real-world situations, and further investigations. Notes to the teacher:
Have students notify you when they have finished slide 2 so that they can begin to partner up to complete slide 3.
Make sure the computers in the lab have PIXIE installed in order to complete activity 2 on slide 4.
Be sure you have created a Health folder on the student drive with a folder for each class that will be completing the activity.
For slide 5, the Family Tree, assign homework day 1 for them to gather the names and birthdates for as many members of their family. Create a handout with the members would want on the tree.
