2 WGISS- 28 Pretoria 2 Lessons Learned Positives –Grid – powerful infrastructure for data integration and complex workflow management –Satisfies GEO requirements to the service based architecture –All over the world there are Grid-infrastructures for Disaster Management &Civil Protection –They could be used for End-to-End Systems Development Challenge –Catalogs &Technologies themselves are not very useful for end users –Users require not source (row) data, but products (risk management assessment or loss assessment)

5 WGISS- 28 Pretoria 5 Solution: –Organizational: CEOS level agreement is necessary for data availability (democracy)& disaster response: »For CEOS countries »For specific disasters (special datasets) –Technical: Data provision & processing (unlike Charter) Should be done in automated mode (workflow is necessary)

8 WGISS- 28 Pretoria 8 Actuality – contribution to Health SBA Africa –rising flood waters intensifies health risks for millions of people, and exacerbates health threats for conditions including malaria, diarrhoea and other potentially fatal communicable diseases [UN, WHO] Ukraine –major threats to health by water related diseases –contamination of drinking water in wells –leads to infectious diseases like hepatitis, leptospirosis etc with long incubation period [Ministry of Health of Ukraine]

GEOSS Health SBA –“… Earth observation data can contribute to improving our understanding of how the environment affects human health and well- being ” –“… remote-sensing observations of weather, land and ocean parameters can now be used to predict outbreaks or trends in infectious diseases such as meningitis, malaria and cholera…”

12 WGISS- 28 Pretoria 12 GIG Proposal WGISS should participate at the consortiums. WGISS possible contribution to the projects: –“Satellite arm” at applied projects; –Networking (we have real working group); –Satellite data availability; –Distribution of GEO principles to disaster warning & response systems & communities (liaison). WGISS benefits: –Framework for WGISS technologies integration & implementation; –Framework for Application Subgroup IG collaboration; –Framework for WGISS deliverables development; –Sustainable services (not prototypes) creation; –Common funding source.
