3 1st EINS Review, Brussels, 12th April, 2013 Objectives  Building solid multidisciplinary foundations for Internet Sciences  From human behaviour related sciences (sociology, anthropology, economics, etc.)  ICT-based tools such as computer systems and network protocols  ‘hard’ sciences (e.g. mathematics, physics and biology)  leverage on similarities and differences among different types of networks  expand the fundamental rules and principles applicable to large classes of networks, and enable predictions on network phenomena.  Follow a reflexive theoretical framework characterised by the interplay between questions of ontology and epistemology and questions of social and economic value.  the first set of questions will address the challenge of communicating not just across different disciplines but across different epistemologies,  the second set of questions will draw from the field of economic anthropology to seek the right balance between the ‘base’ or ‘commons’ and the market in the context of the online knowledge economy and of the emerging cultural forms of the Future Internet.  Become a major focus point of the NoE, by interacting with other JRAs and providing some fundamental insight about their specific activities and in return getting major inputs nurturing the discussion on fundamental issues. WP1

4 1st EINS Review, Brussels, 12th April, 2013 Tasks  T1.1 An economics’ theory for information networks  Lead: Warwick and CERTH o Integrate the relevant aspects of economic into a coherent economic theory for information and communication network. o Provide a multi-disciplinary conceptual platform for facilitating empirical and experimental tests of hypotheses o regulation, social interactions, security, etc. o Identify areas for further research between the different disciplines involved, and pursue innovative research  T1.2 Understanding the structure and the evolution of communication network topologies  Lead: Delft and KNAW o Understanding the fundamental laws that govern the evolution of graphs observed in different information networks o Taxonomy of different graph structures o to detect and understand laws that will help in understanding web graphs, human social networks and the topology of the Internet itself. WP1

5 1st EINS Review, Brussels, 12th April, 2013 Tasks  T1.3 Fundamental basis of large-scale autonomous and dynamic information networks  Lead : ALB To develop and analyse dynamic explicative network models that explain how/why the networks topologies have grown to their observed structure taking into account social and economic characteristics, strategic behaviour, etc. to detect and overcome ‘fallacies of design’ – Mechanisms to increase the likelihood that autonomic interactions at the small scale would yield a functioning large-scale structure need to be explored.  T1.4 Collective network intelligence  Lead : EPFL, UoA Understanding how cooperation in networks results in the emergence of global distributed intelligence. Understanding how collective intelligence and the dynamics and the growth of the network interacts. Integrating research activities between the study of human cognitive processes and the study of Internet technol/ogies. o models describing how humans assess relevance of information based on partial knowledge and how this can be exploited in the design of a massive-scale future Internet o how availability of a massive amount of content anywhere and anytime could impact on the cognitive processes of the humans. WP1

A lot to learn from each other The research in each discipline is also innovative  Need engagement from all partners  The domain is maturing Number of submission to ICIS2013  We need to improve our interaction with other JRAs  JRA1 thinks on the fundaments of other JRA’s  Cross education is needed  5 tutorials  Interactions with IA2 WP1
