1 8TH GRADE MATH STAAR REVIEW

2 PLEASE REMEMBER!! You must TRY each problem! Underline important statements! Bubble as you go DO YOUR BEST!!!

3 Order of Operations P E M D A S
Parenthesis, Exponents, Multiply or Divide, Add or Subtract PLEASE EXCUSE MY DEAR AUNT SALLY

4 Tear it out! WRITE on it! USE IT!
Formula Chart Tear it out! WRITE on it! USE IT! Perimeter Volume Customary Measurement Metric Measurement Area Surface Area

5 Remember AREA is squared To the 2nd power n x n VOLUME is cubed
to the 3rd power n x n x n SQUARE ROOT Find what number can be multiplied by itself

6 Dimensions Perimeter and Circumference are 1 dimension Area is 2 dimensions Volume is 3 dimensions Scale factor that effects dimensions is multiplied to EACH dimension! New Perimeter is SF New Ares SF2 New Volume SF3

7 a²+ b² = c² PYTHAGOREAN THEOREM FORMULA (Right Triangle) C
a and b are sides that form right angle c is the hypotenuse TOTAL DEGREES OF A CIRCLE is 360 degrees 360 SUM OF THE INTERIOR ANGLES of a triangle is 180 degrees 180

8 ADD & SUBTRACT FRACTIONS
Write the problems vertically Find a common denominator Add numerators only Reduce answers to lowest terms 3 = 9 4 =12 2 = 8 3 =12 17 = 5 + 1

9 Denominator x Denominator
MULTIPLY FRACTIONS Write horizontally Numerator x Numerator Denominator x Denominator Reduce to lowest terms 4 x 6 = 24 = 3 5 x 8 = 40 = 5

10 DIVIDE FRACTIONS Write horizontally Remember there is no division
Find the reciprocal (flip it) of the 2nd fraction and multiply (KCF – Keep Change Flip) Reduce to lowest terms 7 . 15 9 ‘ 12 7 x 12 = 54 = 3 9 x 15 = 135 = 5

11 When to Use Proportions
If in doubt, try proportions Comparing two things (miles/gallons) ($ to feet) (meters per second) Rates/Unit Rates Similar Figures Converting Units of Measure Percents % Probability Predictions

12 To solve any percent or comparison problem:
Out of 100 % of 100 To solve any percent or comparison problem: write as a proportion.

13 Percent of a Number DISCOUNT = Rate(%) X Original price
Part = % Whole or Is = % Of DISCOUNT = Rate(%) X Original price FINAL COST = Original price - DISCOUNT SALES TAX=Rate(%) x Price TOTAL COST= Price + SALES TAX

14 Divide the denominator into the numerator
FRACTION TO DECIMAL Divide the denominator into the numerator TOP DOG in the HOUSE! .75 3 4 4 3.00

15 PERCENT TO A FRACTION Place the percent over 100
Reduce to Lowest terms 42% = 42 = 21

16 CHANGE DECIMAL TO A PERCENT
Move the decimal 2 places to the right and add a % sign (Dr. Pepper – DP) (Decimal to Percent) .35 = 35% .354 = 35.4%

17 MEAN MEDIAN MODE Your ‘mean’ teacher will average your grades.
*Don’t use with an outlier MEDIAN Least to Greatest! The ‘middle’ number in an ordered list of numbers. *Use Median when you have an outlier MODE The number that appears the ‘most’.

18 INTEGER RULES Adding Integers 4 + 5 = 9 -4 + -5 = -9 4 + -5 = -1
Positive + Positive = Positive = -9 Negative + Negative = Negative = -1 = 1 Positive + Negative or Negative + Positive You subtract and take the sign of the larger number.

19 Remember – Identify the sign of each number
Subtracting Integers Remember – Identify the sign of each number Then you need to follow the addition rules for integers. *remember two negatives swoosh To make a positive -5 - (-7) = 2

20 Positive x Positive = Positive Positive / Positive = Positive
MULTIPLY & DIVIDING INTEGERS Product/Quotient of like signs is positive Positive x Positive = Positive Positive / Positive = Positive 5 x 6 = 30 = 5 Negative x Negative = Positive Negative / Negative = Positive -4 x -7 = 28 = 4 Product/Quotient of unlike signs is negative Positive x Negative = Negative Negative / Positive = Negative 6x-7 = -42 = -6

21 < less than > greater than
REMEMBER THESE WORDS! V E R T I C A L GOES UP Increase < less than > greater than Decrease GOES DOWN HORIZONTAL

22 Here’s THE PLAN to help you pass the MATH STAAR!!

23 Concentrate on the problems you know
how to solve first. Key words are useful. Leave the harder problems for last. Do not become frustrated. Eliminate extra information!

24 After working each problem circle the answer you have selected in
Use process of elimination to help narrow your answer choices. Choose the answer that is better than the others. After working each problem circle the answer you have selected in your test booklet and BUBBLE YOUR SCANTRON

25 When you are finished working all
the problems, double check your work. Make sure you circled an answer in your test booklet and MARKED YOUR ANSWER SHEET. Rework any problems you had concerns about.

26 ***Mark your scantron very carefully!!!!***
Last But Not Least -- ***Mark your scantron very carefully!!!!*** Make sure each test question has been marked on your answer document Try not to make any mistakes in marking your scantron. If you have to erase be sure to erase the mark completely.

27 YOU CAN DO THIS! You have worked diligently for this day!
Take a deep breathe, Relax, PASS THE STAAR!
