The Duty of Parents

Introduction  Ancient Israelites had a spiritual obligation to their children (Deut. 6:4-9; Exod. 13:3- 10), as do Christian parents today (Eph. 6:4; Col. 3:21).

Examples of Failure  Reflect upon the misplaced values of the Antediluvian world (Gen. 6:1-8).  Consider the curse that fell upon Eli’s house because his sons were evil and he did not rebuke them (1 Sam. 3:10-14; cf. 2:12-17, 22-25).

Examples of Success  Note the noble examples of Abraham and Joshua (Gen. 18:19; Josh. 24:15).  Ponder the perfect example of Jesus Christ during His youth (Luke 2:51-52).  Remember the guidance that Lois and Eunice provided young Timothy (2 Tim. 1:5- 7; 3:13-15).

Conclusion  Lessons learned in the home follow us through life.  How are we doing as parents? Are we fulfilling our God-given roles as fathers and mothers?

Challenge  Using the time allotted, let us train our children to face the challenges of time and eternity, helping them grow into responsible adulthood, and more importantly, preparing them for heaven.
