HHPS HHPS or Hazardous Household Products Symbols warn people of potential dangers when dealing with chemicals both in industry and at home. Knowing how to read the symbols is essential to your own safety and protection. NOT knowing how to read them puts you at risk of serious injury or death.

SHAPE DISTINCTION The shape of a symbol indicates whether a product poses a danger (octagon), a warning (diamond), or a caution (triangle).

CORROSIVE A skeletal hand within a beaker indicates that the substance in question is CORROSIVE. “Corrosive” means that it can eat away at your skin and/or your eye(s). Acids and bases tend to be corrosive.

FLAMMABLE A flame indicates that the substance will easily burn. Some substances will burn if a match or fire is introduced, but some are so flammable that air or water can ignite the substance.

REACTIVE Sometimes referred to as explosive, this exploding ball indicates you should take caution when handling it. DO NOT shake it, heat it or hold it near a flame. It could also produce deadly vapours.

TOXIC Sometimes referred to as poisonous, the death symbol tells you that ingestion of this substance can kill you.

CORROSIVE Recall that the shape of the symbol indicates the severity of the hazard.
