Decimals as Fractions and Fractions as Division

Today’s Learning Goals  We will continue to link our understanding of fractions with decimals.  We will continue to think about how to convert between fractions and decimals and vice versa.

Review of Place Value Suppose that Marcus ordered 3.75 pounds of ham at the deli. We could say this amount by stating the value of each place. We know that the 3 is in the ones place. What is the value of the other places? 3 7 5 ones tenths hundredths The tenths column is directly to the right of the decimal point and then the hundredths place to the right of that.

Review of Decimals to Fractions We could also state the amount that Marcus ordered as a mixed fraction. How would you say that? 3 7 5

Review of Decimal Denominators Previously, we discussed how to change fractions to a decimal by changing the denominator to a decimal denominator. For example, how would we change the following fractions to a decimal by getting an equivalent fraction? *25 75 = 0.75 *5 25 = 2.5 a) *2 8 = 0.8 b) c)

Fractions as Division Another way to view fractions is as the division of two whole numbers. For example, the fraction could be thought of as 3  4. How do we divide 3 by 4? 3 4 0 0 3 7 2 8 2 0 0 5 So, when we divide, we see that ! = 20

Fractions as Division Let us convert into a decimal by doing the division. 4 5 0 0 4 8 4 0 0 0 So, when we divide, we see that ! =

Partner Work You have 20 minutes to work on the following problems with your partner.

For those that finish early Fill in the missing cells for the table below. Please write the fraction in simplest form. DecimalFraction 31.22

Big Idea from Today’s Lesson Our number system is a base-10 system. To the right of the decimal point, there is the tenths place and then the hundredths place. Fractions can also be thought of as the division of two whole numbers (numerator  denominator).

Homework Complete Homework Worksheet.
