1 I DIED LAST NIGHT

2 Are you prepared for your death?
Story of business man going to financial advisor. At meetings he would say, “I died last night. Tell me what happened to my family, my business, & estate.” At death, a person’s spiritual condition will be much more important than his finances (Luke 12:15-21) None of us truly think that we will die unexpectedly.

3 Are you prepared for your death?
We think that tragedies only happen to others and therefore may give little thought to our own death. The reality is that we will all die someday (Hebrews 9:27) and there is no promise of tomorrow (Luke 12:20; James 4:13-15).

4 Are you prepared for your death?
Jesus was prepared for death and by God’s grace experienced it for everyone. He overcame the devil so that we might be free from the fear of death! (Hebrews 2:9, 14-15) Since death is a gain for Christians we should not be discouraged but have the eternal perspective of the apostle Paul whose hope was renewed daily (Philippians 1:21,23, 2 Corinthians 4:16-18)

5 Are you prepared for your death?
The choices and decisions you make today will help determine where you will spend eternity (2 Corinthians 5:10) The answers to the following questions will determine your destination. If you died last night, where would you spend eternity?

6 Did I Obey the Lord? (Hebrews 5:8-9)
Since no one who practices sin will go to heaven (Revelation 21:27), I must know, “do I have the forgiveness of my sins”? Did I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God or did I refuse to be convicted? (John 8:24) Did I truly repent of my sins or was I sorry that I got caught? (Luke 13:3) Did I confess my faith before men or did I deny Him before men? (Matthew 10:32-33)

7 Did I Obey the Lord? (Hebrews 5:8-9)
Was I baptized into Christ for the remission of my sins? (Mark 16:16; Acts 2:38; 22:16; 1 Peter 3:21) The Bible teaches that those who do not know God and do not obey will be punished forever. (2 Thessalonians 1:8-9) Have you obeyed the Lord’s gospel?

8 Was I Faithful to the Lord? (Rev. 2:10)
Did I study God’s word so that I might be a doer of His work or did I neglect it? (2 Timothy 2:15; James 1:22ff) Did I forsake the assembling of the saints? (Hebrews 10:25) Did I pray instead of worry? (Philippians 4:6-7) Did I abstain from every form of evil? (1 Thessalonians 5:22)

9 Was I Faithful to the Lord? (Rev. 2:10)
Did I practice righteousness or sin? (1 John 3:7-8) As a Christian, did I confess my sins or try to cover them up? (Proverbs 28:13; 1 John 1:8-10; James 5:16) After you die, all of your good intentions will not help you. Have you been faithful to the Lord?

10 Did I Help Others? (Galatians 6:10)
A separation will take place at the Judgment based on how we treated others (hungry, thirsty, naked, stranger, prisoner) (Matthew 25:31-46) Did you treat others the same way you want to be treated? (Matthew 7:12) A dead faith may say kind words but does not act on them to help others. (James 2:14-17)

11 Did I Help Others? (Galatians 6:10)
Christ laid down is life for us, and we should sacrifice for our brethren. (1 John 3:16-18) If you had really died last night, would you have left an example like Dorcas and Barnabas? (Acts 9:36; 4:32) or Ananias and Sapphira? (Acts 5:1-12) If unprepared, resolve to replace your hurtful words and selfish actions with graceful speech (Col. 4:6) and deeds of love (1 Cor. 13)? Have you helped others?

12 What Influence Did I Have on My Family?
Did you leave a godly example like Noah (1 Peter 3:20), Lois and Eunice (2 Timothy 1:5), or like Eli (1 Samuel 3:13). What will your family think of you when you’re gone? Did you have time for everything else except for your family? (Ephesians 5:15ff)

13 What Influence Did I Have on My Family?
Too many will be concerned too late (after death) to help or influence their families for good! (Luke 16:27f) Jesus wants you to be a good influence now. (Matthew 5:13-16) Have you been a good influence on your family?

14 Conclusion Obey the gospel or be restored while we stand & sing!
You died last night. Were you prepared? If not, would you change if you could? If yes, do it now before you die and judgment comes! (Hebrews 9:27) After death it will be too late, and all the arguing, weeping, and wailing will not get you out of torment! (Matthew 7:21-23; 8:12; 13:42, 50) Obey the gospel or be restored while we stand & sing!
