Free Curriculum Management & Assessment System! The Villages Charter School has developed an online curriculum management and assessment system specifically tailored to the Florida Next Generation Standards. At this session we will provide an overview of the system and explain how all charter schools will have free access to the system. Dissemination Grant Project Successful Practices - Data Warehouse - Data Dashboard

2000-2001 – Elementary K-5 established 2001-2002 – Middle school established 2003-2004 – High school established Summer 2004 – Needed uniform curriculum 2004-2007 – Updates made to Excel spreadsheets Aug. 2007-2008 – Searched for commercial product

Charter School Dissemination Grant November 2008 – The Fun Began! For two years the grant has operated in developing 3 areas Successful Practice s Data Warehouse Data Dashboard

Data Warehouse Assessment Test banks aligned to benchmarks Data Reports Performance on course tests – Data to analyze each benchmark’s performance per student, class & course Curriculum Management standards- teaching strategies-resources- assessments-

Data Warehouse Startup… Worked with Dragon Point to write the data warehouse software program Entered state and school standards, notated the “Power Standards” Entered test bank questions and associated each one to a benchmark Attached lesson plans, resources and websites to benchmarks Created the “look and feel” of our site visitor view and access

Home Page – Site Visitor View Site visitors have read-only access via a link from The Villages Charter School website (www.tvcs.org). Click #2 Standards & Resources Lesson Plans Websites Curriculum List: “Drill down” Guests will click a subject then grade/course to view information for that course. Click #3 Click #1

Administrative Control: Subjects: Create Deleted Copy

Administrative Control: Grades/Courses: Associate teacher to the course/subject (this data is imported from our TERMS database). Create Deleted Copy

Administrative Control: Standards: Add/Edit/Delete Standards Assign Power Standards Add Lesson Plans, Websites and Resources

Administrative Control: Questions: Add/Edit/Delete questions in the test bank Copy the question/answer/standard to a new bank Link questions to standards

Administrative Control: Tests: Each time a test is created, new questions are assigned. Each time a new student accesses a test, the questions are rearranged so that the same questions are used but in a different order. Create Tests Assign tests to students Close and grade tests Print and view tests and keys.

How do Computerized Tests work??? Each subject has a test bank consisting of questions associated to benchmarks. A new test is created – Test Name – Number of questions – Maximum minutes Questions are randomly selected from the bank of active questions. – Ideally, 2/3 of the test questions are power standards. The remaining questions are non-power standards. For example, 100 question test = 67 power standards + 23 non-power standards. Test are assigned to students. Each student has the same test questions that are randomly assigned to each individual’s test. Tests are scored within minutes by the click of a button!

Administrative Control: Reports: Comparison Reports Reports By Standard Incomplete Student Tests Reports … Reports

Reports … Reports by Standard Reports … Comparison Report

Reports … Incomplete Student Tests Report Example of Reports by Standard

Administrative Control: Managing Reports… Shared Directory – Restricted Permissions – Information housed in one location – Administrators have access to all data Contents Of Folders: Folder Contents – Course Standards – Resource Worksheet – Test Results

Administrative Control: Administration: TERMS import Copy data to the next school year. Student login information

Where in the world did all this data come from??? Standards State Villages Charter School Classroom Teachers Completed Templates Lesson Plans Test Banks Websites Resource Worksheets

Standards (Power Standards highlighted)

Lesson Plans Lesson plans were submitted by our teachers and associated to the benchmark in the data warehouse.

Test Bank Websites

Resource Worksheets Art/2-D Comp 1: VCS Visual Arts #0101300 Strand A Skills and Techniques Standard 1 The student understands and applies media, techniques, and processes. PS Benchmark 1 The student uses two-dimensional and three-dimensional media, techniques, tools, and processes to communicate an idea or concept based on research, environment, personal experience, observation, or imagination. Sample Teaching Strategy: Students will learn how to transfer a sketch onto scratchboard and the techniques to proper scratchboard carving by creating “dream gardens”. Resources: Visually demonstrate to the students the different tools and techniques used on scratchboard. To assist in their ideas for this project provide artificial flowers, and show movie clips that depict different gardens. Movie examples are "The Secret Garden" and "Shrek 2" (swamp scenes). Sample Assessment: Provide students with a sample scratchboard where they will demonstrate the techniques taught before handing out their project scratchboard.

Implementation at The Elementary Level -K-4 teachers created resource worksheets, lesson plans and test banks and found websites for the Next Generation standards. -Lesson plans and websites were created by each teacher -Test bank questions and resources were created in groups Lesson Plans & Websites -Which benchmarks warranted lesson plans and websites? -Did textbook cover topic in depth? -Teacher created vs. textbook created? -Emphasis on benchmarks most difficult for all students based on learning styles, degree of difficulty, and concepts abstractness Resource Data -From textbooks and teachers Variety of resources including trade books, videos, activity sheets, field trips, and lesson plans

Test Bank Questions Development -Based on written and performance assessments -More difficult to determine in the lower grades (Primary K-1) -Observation based (non written) method must be mastered through student performance -Non-observation (written) based method had test questions developed based on assessments and activities related to those standards *Non-Observation based (written) *Observation based (non written)

Elementary Implementation: Lesson Plan Example

Middle School Implementation Standards: Next Generation standards vs. Sunshine State standards Lesson plans: (Fun activities = Learning!!) Review and attach to the new standards Created by teachers NOT textbooks - Specifically written so any teacher could teach Textbooks: Were the new standards appropriately covered? Any “holes”? If so, how did we adjust? Test Banks: Five questions were written for each benchmark “Power Standards” were notated We are now “Experts” on Next Generation Standards! Test Results: Closely review to find “holes” Help to shape a new plan for the following school year A Teacher’s Perspective

Middle School Implementation: Lesson Plan Example

Implementation at The High School Level Test Bank Questions and Resources – Internet search engines to find suitable websites for benchmarks » Florida Department of Education Website Sample Assessment Questions - Changed numbers and verbiage to create new math problems Items specifications for FCAT tested benchmarks - To assist in creating test bank questions - To assist in writing appropriate resources – Textbooks and Other Math Resources Lesson Plans – Which benchmarks are targeted as weak? Data Warehouse Test Results By Standards FCAT Score Reports 29

High School Implementation: Lesson Plan Example

How do you gain f-r-e-e access to this system? Department of Education will provide information to all interested Florida Charter Schools. The training component for this data warehouse program will be available on our website (www.tvcs.org)www.tvcs.org
