R ESEARCH PAPER Using in-text citations and writing a Works Cited for your paper

C ITING YOUR SOURCES IN YOUR PAPER When writing a sentence that you wrote word for word from a source you must either mention the authors name in the sentence, or write the author’s name and page number in parentheses Example: Wordsworth stated that Romantic poetry was marked by a “spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings” (263). Romantic poetry is characterized by the “spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings” (Wordsworth 263). Wordsworth extensively explored the role of emotion in the creative process (263).

C ITING SOURCES IN YOUR PAPER C ONT ’ D In-text citations for PRINT source with NO author We see so many global warming hotspots in North America likely because this region has “more readily accessible climatic data and more comprehensive programs to monitor and study environmental change” (“Impact of Global Warming” 6). In-text citations for PRINT source with an author Human beings have been described by Kenneth Burke as “symbol-using animals” (3). Human beings have been described as “symbol-using animals” (Burke 3).

C ITING SOURCES IN YOUR PAPER CONT ’ D Citing a PRINT source with multiple authors Smith, Yang, and Moore argue that tougher gun control is not needed in the United States (76). The authors state “Tighter gun control in the United States erodes Second Amendment rights” (Smith, Yang, and Moore 76). Citing PRINT source with more than 3 authors Legal experts counter Smith, Yang, and Moore’s argument by noting that the current spike in gun violence in America compels law makers to adjust gun laws (Jones et al. 4). Joes et al. counter Smith, Yang, and Moore’s argument by noting that the current spike in gun violence in America compels law makers to adjust gun laws (4).

C ITING SOURCES IN YOUR PAPER CONT ’ D Citing PRINT multivolume works Always include the VOLUME NUMBER followed by a colon (:) Put a space after the colon then write the page numbers. In the example below the title of the Volume is included in the sentence. … As Quintilian wrote in Institutio Oratoria (1: 14- 17)

C ITING SOURCES IN YOUR PAPER CONT ’ D Citing NON PRINT sources from the Internet You may either write the name of the website domain in your sentence or write down a partial URLs such as the name of the site ex. “CNN.com or Forbes.com Examples: According to CNN.com the perpetrator was caught at 10 p.m. “More than 200 years after Samuel Adams and Paul Revere first buried it in Boston, it took an hour to remove all the objects crammed inside a tiny time capsule” (www.cnn.com). If the online source has a title and an author you should include both in the parentheses after the sentence. Example : One online critic stated that Fitzcarraldo is “ … a beautiful and terrifying critique of colonialism” (Garcia, “Herzog: a Life”).

W RITING A RESEARCH PAPER - I N S TEPS Discovering and Narrowing a Topic Reading Sources Documenting Information (taking notes) Writing an outline Writing the Introduction Writing the Body Writing the Conclusion Revising the Final Draft

W RITING AN O UTLINE To write an outline for your research project you need to determine what your argument or “point” is. For example, your point may be to write an informational piece about a part of the Holocaust Your purpose is to inform about a particular topic.

E XAMPLE OF AN O UTLINE I. Introduction II. Josef Mengele Early Years A. Early Life B. Rise to Nazism III. Medical Experiments A. Josef Mengele's medical experiments B. Focus on twins, babies & dwarves C. Details of the Experiments IV. Josef Mengele Later Years A. The end of the concentrations camps B. After he fled C. End of life VI. Conclusion

I NTRODUCTION & C ONCLUSION Introductory paragraph introduces your topic to the person reading your paper. When writing the introduction you should state your topic and what you intend to share with the audience. “During WWII one of the biggest atrocities that has been recorded was the Holocaust. The Holocaust was a time in history where certain people were discriminated against by the German Nazis. The different tortures they put upon these people were extraordinary. Some of these horrors were doled out by Dr. Josef Mengele.”

B ODY P ARAGRAPH OF P APER The body paragraph should hold most of the information that you intend to share with your audience. “Josef Mengele was the oldest son, born on March 16, 1911 to Mr. Karl Mengele. In 1935 Mengele earned his Ph.D. from the University of Munich and then by 1937 was the assistant to Dr. Otmar von Verschuer who focused his research on twins. Later that year he joined the Nazi Party. He joined the S.S. after he received his medical degree and then by 1940 had been drafted into the army.”

B ODY PARAGRAPH CONT ’ D “After Mengele was injured on tour he came back to the concentration camps to serve as a doctor for the camps. He started working at Auschwitz in the spring of 1943, in charge of Birkenau’s “Gypsy camp”. According to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, approximately 30 physicians served at Auschwitz while Mengele worked there. Medical staff often choice who would stay as laborers and who would go straight to the gas chambers. Mengele often looked for babies, dwarves, and twins. “These experiments included forcible sterilization, amputations and injections of lethal substances to observe their reactions” (The Holocaust 3: 264-265).

B ODY P ARAGRAPH CONT ’ D Mengele was interested in twins for medical research to learn about human heredity. Mengele started working with twins legally, with his mentor but once at Auschwitz he “preformed a broad range of agonizing and often lethal experiments with Jewish and Roma twins, most of them children” (www.ushmm.org).www.ushmm.org In 1985 police found the body of Mengele buried in a family member’s yard. He had given himself a new name which he was buried under. He died in a swimming accident. Josef Mengele was a doctor who did not follow moral standards in his practice and was wanted for his war crimes but never caught.
