9 One Last Document: A letter from Maurice Solomon of the Refugee Settlement Farm to the British Home Office November 24 th 1939 What is Maurice Solomon asking for? What does he have in mind for the 12 people? How does he convince the Home Office that his request is worthwhile? What costs are involved? Who is paying?

10 The Home Secretary has passed this letter on to you. You have to advise him on whether or not to allow the 12 refugees into Northern Ireland. Put your advice in a report. As you prepare your report you should think about:  What the refugees have been through  The type of people they seem to be  Attitudes towards them in Ireland  Government policy in Britain  Arguments against allowing them in  Arguments in favour of allowing them in You will need to finish with a clear conclusion setting out your personal views.
