Free Application for Federal Student Aid Administered by the office of Federal Student Aid, part of the U.S. Department of Education Provides a snapshot of the student and parents’ financial situation Must be completed each school year that you wish to apply for financial aid for higher education

3 WHY COMPLETE A FAFSA? FAFSA is used to determine eligibility for federal student aid programs Grants: do not have to be repaid Loans: must be repaid with interest Work-study: earn money while enrolled in school to help pay for education expenses Most states and colleges use your FAFSA to determine eligibility for state and school aid

4 EXPECTED FAMILY CONTRIBUTION (EFC) FAFSA is used to calculate your Expected Family Contribution (EFC), an indicator of the family’s financial strength to pay for higher education EFC is not the amount of money that your family must provide School uses the EFC amount to determine the amount of financial aid you are eligible to receive

5 WHEN SHOULD I SUBMIT? As early in 2013 as possible Ideally, you should submit a FAFSA after you’ve completed your 2012 tax return IRS Data Retrieval Tool (DRT) can import information directly from your completed tax return into your FAFSA Many school financial aid deadlines are prior to the tax filing deadline Check with individual institutions to ensure that you don’t miss their deadline Amounts must be estimated if return not filed prior to completing FAFSA Corrections will need to be made using DRT if estimated amounts do not match actual tax return
