2  Introduction – Pete Walton (15 minutes)  Why integrate the two?  How?  Brief overview of Public Health 101 – Walton (15)  Teaching & Learning Presentation: “Instructional Tools You Can Use NOW” Andrew L. Wright, Ph.D. College of Business

3  Share best practices and emerging scholarship in teaching and learning  Strengthen a unit-wide culture of conversation about teaching and learning  Provide an interactive and collaborative learning experience  Offer participants concrete teaching strategies and “take-aways” for immediate implementation  Stay on track with i2a (Ideas to Action) expectations and requirements for the undergraduate degree

4  It is a General Education course in Social and Behavioral Sciences.  Usually taken by undergrads in first 60 credit hours.  Where are we with PH-101?  Syllabus developed, course approved (3 credit hours)  Starts this Fall (August!), Tues & Thurs 08:00-09:15  Text has changed, need course and class plans

5  It’s an ideal opportunity for discussions of teaching and learning using an example.  Our example: implementing Public Health 101  Presenting public health in an integrated approach  Class plans using existing and innovative T&L techniques and tools  Course plans using existing technology  Simply put: Let’s get PH-101 done!  What better way to begin our discussions on teaching and learning than using T&L techniques as in integral part of the discussion?

6  Public Health 101 Working Group  Meets 1 st Monday of each month to review and plan  Subgroups develop implementation plans for sections of the course  Subgroups present plans in workshops  Teaching & Learning Workshop Planning Group  Meets 2 nd Thursday of each month to review and plan  Plans and promotes workshops with External Affairs  Integrated Teaching & Learning Workshops  Held 4 th Friday of each month through October  First part: Presentation of section of course Updates of previously presented sections  Second part: Presentation of T&L techniques and ideas

7  Parts that are pretty much done:  Description, Course Objectives, Policies, General Education Learning Outcomes  Student Evaluation o Five-minute class summaries with rubric o Exams (3) o Journal (electronic) with rubric o Essay with rubric o Field trip (extra credit)  Text – changed after syllabus completed

8  Parts that are not done:  Classes and Topics – need to be redeveloped to utilize new text  Course and class implementation – need to be developed from scratch PHPH-101 Introduction to Public Health–SB syllabus

9  Public Health 101 Working Group  Course will have multiple subparts  Each subpart will be developed by a subgroup chaired by a member of the Working Group  Subgroup members will be:  Recruited by subgroup chairs  Volunteers  Let me know if you’re interested!
