1 Identification and Service Options for Gifted Students

2 Primary Students Primary Talent Pool students are screened and selected as high potential learners using informal assessment tools. Kentucky does not categorically or formally identify primary students as being gifted.

3 Primary Talent Pool High potential learners are identified for participation in the primary talent pool. Multiple assessment options are utilized to assess the degree of demonstrated gifted characteristics and behaviors

4 A minimum of three recognized or acceptable assessment options is required for participation

5 Primary student services shall be provided within the framework of the primary program requirements and shall allow for continuous progress through a differentiated curriculum and flexible grouping and regrouping based on the individual needs, interests and abilities. Most of the services are provided in the regular classroom,

6 Students in Grades 4-12 Students in grades 4-12 are formally identified utilizing a balanced multiple criteria approach that includes a valid and reliable combination of measures to identify strengths, gifted behaviors and talents which indicate a need and eligibility for service options.

7 Multiple service delivery options for formally identified students in grades 4-12 may include: AccelerationHonors and AP Classes Collaborative teachingEnrichment Services Independent StudyIndividualized differentiated study Resource ServicesSeminars Cluster Grouping

8 Formally Identified Gifted Categories General Intellectual Creative or divergent thinking Visual or performing arts Specific academic aptitude Leadership

9 General Intellectual Ability General intellectual ability shall be determined by a student scoring within the ninth stanine on a full-scale comprehensive test of intellectual ability. If a student scores lower on formal group measures of intellectual ability, yet other documentation shows potential, the district shall administer an individual mental ability test.

10 General Intellectual Ability Evidence of general intellectual ability may include: High performance on individual or group intellectual assessment Observation of applied advanced reasoning ability Checklist inventories of behaviors specific to underachieving or disadvantaged to gifted learners

11 Specific Academic Aptitude Specific academic aptitude shall be determined by composite scores in the ninth stanine on one or more subject test scores of an achievement test. If a student scores lower on a formal group measure of academic strength, yet other documentation shows potential, the district shall administer another standardized normed achievement test.

12 Specific Academic Aptitude Evidence of specific academic aptitude may also include: High performance on individual or group test of academic aptitude Student awards or critiques of performances Off-level testing Portfolio of high academic performances Student progress data

13 Creativity Creativity shall be determined through the use of informal or formal assessment measures of a child’s capacity for originality of thought, fluency, elaboration and flexibility.

14 Creativity Evidence of creative thinking ability may also include: Creative writing samples High scores on tests of creative ability Behavioral checklists Observation of original ideas, products or problem solving

15 Leadership Leadership abilities shall be determined by a variety of informal measures and the documentation of the willingness of a student to assume leadership roles in class, in a student organization, and in a community activity.

16 Leadership Evidence of leadership ability may include: Sociograms (leadership questionnaires) Peer recommendations Behavioral checklists Portfolio entries that display leadership qualities Offices held by a student in extracurricular activities and student government

17 Visual and Performing Arts Visual and performing art talent shall be determined through evidence of performance, which may include auditions, letters of recommendation, or product or portfolio assessment by specialists or professional artists.

18 Visual and Performing Arts Evidence of visual and performing arts also may include: Awards or critiques of performance Portfolio of visual or performing arts ability

19 Possible Formal and Informal Assessments Utilized for Formal Identification (Minimum of 3 and must include formal assessment of cognitive ability for General Intellectual and Specific Aptitude Identification) Teacher Recommendation Parent Recommendation Student Products OTIS LENNON RAVEN STAR ACHIEVE GRADE ASSESSMENT Surveys Questionnaires KCCT CTBS ACT SAT Other Cognitive Ability Tests
