3 A Couple of Things About AAIDD Mission AAIDD promotes progressive policies, sound research, effective practices, and universal human rights for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Goals Enhance the capacity of professionals who work with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Participate in the development of a society that fully includes individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Build an effective, responsive, well-managed, responsibly-governed, and sustainable organization.

4 Structure AAIDD is a membership organization Governed by a Board of Directors elected by the membership Standing and ad-hoc committees of the Board Supported by 12 staff, a number of contractors, and numerous volunteer leaders Components are: Geographical units, of regional, state, provincial, and student Chapters. Professional groups, including divisions, action groups, SIGs, and task forces Fellows

5 Major Functions The major functions of the Association are to Support its members’ leadership in activities that affect people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Publish and promote cutting edge research, tools, and materials that inform policy and practice. Develop and implement educational opportunities for professionals, policy makers, and others; and Engage in activities that promote progressive public policy.

12 Activities over the past 12 months Held webinars at about the rate of 1 per month on a variety of topics Provided 2-day trainings on Positive Behavioral Supports and Supervisor Training Launched new online learning program on the Essential Learning platform Developed 2011 conference Education

13 Planned activities for the coming year Build the content and capacity of the online learning platform Continue to host webinars at least monthly Continue our current educational partnership with The Arc through its Autism NOW project Provide a full day symposium at the 2012 IASSID conference Develop 2012 AAIDD conference Co-sponsor the Coleman Institute and the ANCOR Technology conferences Education

23 Activities over the past 12 months Active member of the Consortium for Citizens with Disabilities (CCD) Co-sponsored the annual Disability Policy Seminar with 5 other national organizations Submitted Amicus briefs on Atkins cases Contributed to joint policy statements with The Arc Submitted comments on Rosa’s law legislation, plans to add a “wandering” code to the ICD-9-CM, others Contributed to the popular press on disability issues Policy

24 Environmental Health Initiative Chemical Policy Reform – Legislative reform efforts included sign on letters, participation in Congressional hearings and briefings, and commentary on draft legislation – Executive branch efforts included meetings with key federal staff to advance reform efforts and commentary on proposed rules. Education and Outreach – Hosted 4 Research and Science webinars and 6 Policy webinars (archived on the website) – Ongoing work with other national and state organizations to advance reform goals – Co-hosted Health Advocacy meeting in DC in January – Contributed to the popular press on issues of environmental health – Holding a post conference workshop on the science, policy, and economics of environmental exposures and the health of people with disabilities.
