2 2 Welcome MICE CM33, Glasgow, 25 June 2012 o Welcome to the University of Glasgow, founded in 1451, Scotland’s second oldest university and fourth oldest in the English speaking world.

3 3 School of Physics and Astronomy MICE CM33, Glasgow, 25 June 2012 o The School of Physics and Astronomy is situated in the Kelvin Building of the main university campus Bus for Excursion at 2pm Thursday

4 4 School of Physics and Astronomy MICE CM33, Glasgow, 25 June 2012 o The Chair of Natural Philosophy was founded in 1727 o Its most famous holder was Sir William Thomson, Lord Kelvin, from 1846 to 1899 o The Regius Chair in Astronomy dates from 1760 o The Departments of Natural Philosophy and Astronomy merged into the Department (now School) of Physics and Astronomy in 1983

5 5 Particle Physics in Glasgow o Particle physics commenced in Glasgow under Professor Philip Dee, a student of Rutherford, in the 1950s with the construction of a 300 MeV electron-synchrotron o Glasgow experimental Particle Physics were then involved in experiments at NINA (Daresbury), DESY, CEA (Harvard) and PS (CERN) o Other experiments included the Omega spectrometer at CERN, PLUTO and CELLO at DESY, ALEPH at CERN, ZEUS at DESY and CDF at Fermilab o Currently, the main activities are ATLAS and LHCb at CERN, Neutrino Factory, MICE and detector development for future applications (ILC, Super-LHC, etc.)

6 6 Collaboration Meeting o All sessions will be in Room 222 and 220a of the Kelvin Building o Teas/coffees, lunches will be in Room 220 (just in front) for all days except Friday. On Friday we will have tea/coffee and lunch in the Common Room, Room 470 (since there is an exam taking place in room 220) o Wireless is available throughout the building with names like PAGlaWireless. The code has been included with the pack. o Remote access to talks will be carried out by EVO (information on Indico page)

7 7 Activities around Glasgow o The university hosts the Hunterian Museum and Hunterian Art Gallery (largest collection of Whistler paintings outside USA) o Kelvingrove Museum very close o Riverside Transport Museum (20 min walk) o Further afield: Burrell Collection, Museum of Religious Art,… o Lots of pubs and restaurants in West End and the city o However, busy time since we are in Graduation week

8 8 Social Programme o Tonight there will be a wine reception 18:00-20:00 here in room 220 of the Kelvin Building o On Thursday there will be an afternoon excursion:  Depart 14:00 from Wolfson Medical Building (University Ave.)  Visit Auchentoshan Distillery  Go to Loch Lomomd for a cruise on the Loch  Banquet dinner at the Lodge on Loch Lomond in Luss
