Wave equation, practice Tuesday, February 3, 2015

Unit 7: Waves Tuesday, 2/3 Respond to the following How does the medium of a wave affect the wave’s velocity. Support your answer. Upcoming Events  Thursday, 2/5 – Waves Quiz  Friday, 2/6 – 4SW extra credit due by 4:00 PM  Friday, 2/13 – Waves Quiz  Friday, 2/13 – End of 4SW  Wednesday, 2/18 – Waves Test (5SW)

Frequency and Period  Working with your elbow partner do the following: 1. Create a T chart for the characteristics of frequency and period.

Frequency example Michael Phelps swims 20 laps in 3 minutes (180 seconds). What is the frequency of Michael Phelps swimming?

Period example Bobby and Bertha are playing a game of ping pong. The ball goes back and forth 40 times. The period of the game is ____________ seconds

Practice  Complete first section of your notes.

Where we’ve been - speed  Refer to section two on your notes

Wave equation

What affects the speed of a wave?  Calculate the wave speed in the ‘wave speed practice section of your handout.

Summary  Are there any trends? Support your answer.  What conclusion can you make regarding the relationship between velocity and the medium? Support your answer.  What is the relationship between velocity and wavelength?  What is the relationship between velocity and frequency?  What is the relationship between wavelength and frequency?

Wave Equation Relationships  Wavelength and frequency are inversely proportional.  Velocity remains unchanged  Velocity (speed) of the wave is only affected by the medium in which it is traveling in.

Practice

Cool down  Write everything you know about wave properties and wave speed (3 minutes).  Write one item that is muddy about wave properties and or wave speed.
