4 Basics Accessibility to Comercial Centers by Public Transport Infrastructure-based accessibility measure (Geurs & van Wee, 2004). Travel time. Model Location-based accessibility measure. Mapping, GIS Isochrone maps (GIS) to shopping centers in Metrosur influence area. Madrid Basics

5 GIS are increasingly being used in transit research and planning because of their ability to manage, display, and analyze spatial data (Miller, 1999; Nyerges, 1995). GIS provide a flexible framework for estimating the population served by transit (Murray et al, 1998; O'Neill et al, 1992). Such an estimate may be obtained using GIS by delineating geographic areas for which transit demand is considered to be served and by determining the population within each area (Hsiao et al, 1997; Peng and Dueker, 1995).

6 It is possible, using GIS network analysis capabilities, to calculate distances along the street network, simulating the real routes followed by the population in their way to stops and stations (Horner and Murray, 2004; Hsiao et al, 1997; O'Neil et al, 1992 A review of GIS-based research focusing on transit systems can be found in Horner and Murray (2004) and Miller and Shaw (2001).
