5. GIS are increasingly being used in transit research and planning because of their ability to manage, display, and analyze spatial data (Miller, 1999; Nyerges, 1995). GIS provide a flexible framework for estimating the population served by transit (Murray et al, 1998; O'Neill et al, 1992). Such an estimate may be obtained using GIS by delineating geographic areas for which transit demand is considered to be served and by determining the population within each area (Hsiao et al, 1997; Peng and Dueker, 1995).
