1 Progressivism Webquest Directions Social Studies

2 Introduction A period of great change known as the Progressiv e Era took place in the late 1800’s and early 1900 ’s. The Progressives were people who worked to ri d America of many of its problems. They made the public aware of the problems, which then resulted i n the government passing laws to end these evils. Some of the problems that the progressives worked on were alcohol abuse, child labor, corruption in city government, in ner city slums, impure food and women suffrage.

3 Your Task: You will be assigned to work with a group of s tudents in class. Each member of your team w ill be responsible for working on one of the following topics: Women’s Suffrage William “Boss” Tweed Temperance Movement **You will work on your topic ALONE until it is COMPLETE. Then, you will meet with your group to share what you have done.

4 Women’s Suffrage 1. Create a timeline of listing 10 historic events or people related to women’s suffrage ending with the passage of the 19th Amendment. 2. Find and print a political cartoon relating to wo men’s suffrage. 3.Write an article for your new sletter in support of women’s suffrage.

5 William “Boss” Tweed 1.Write a short biography of William “Boss” T weed. 2. Find and print a political cartoon by Thomas Nast on the Tweed Ring. 3. Write an article for your newsletter exposing the corrup tion of “Boss” Tweed.

6 Temperance Movement 1.Write a short biography of Carrie Nation. 2. Find and print a political cartoon on the Tempe rance Movement or Prohibition. 3.Write a spe ech or article for your newsletter in favor of te mperance.

7 Where do I look??? First, you will be going to Ms. Williamson’s web page. Write down this link: awilliamson.wikispaces.com

8 Next... On the left side of the web page, click on the link that says “webquests.” Once you are there, click on the rubric and read it. Then, read the next directions. Last, click on the link to the webquest.

9 Then... Once you are to the webquest, re-read ALL the directions carefully and ask any questions you have. At the bottom of the webquests there are website provided where you should begin your search. PRINTING COPIES IN THE LAB COSTS 10 CENTS PER PAGE!!!!!
