Finding a Job for you

take inventory of yourself - who are you, what is important to you, where are you going?

Personal values personal values are where we attribute our worth, our merit, and our usefulness. personal values change clarify your values

Steven Reiss - shared values produce team spirit and cohesiveness in a workplace, whereas conflicts of values lead to divisiveness and hidden agendas do you know anyone already working there? do you trust their opinion?

no-one on the planet can tell you what your values are which of these are important? animal welfare, the underdog, high quality medicine at a price, low quality medicine for a low price, shelter medicine, yuppy medicine if money were not an object - would you work here? is money an issue? what do you need from this job - short commute, bags of money, camaraderie, healthy pets, sick pets, pace?

in an interview (and even on a resume) you will need to sell yourself - who are you and what can you bring to the team you cannot answer these questions if you cannot identify what you want in a practice if you cant take this seriously - you will settle for what you think there is versus searching for what you truly desire

write it down what do you want - prioritize this list who are you, what do you bring to a team

what is important in a job?

Attitude - a manner, a disposition, feeling or position toward a person, thing, or idea the relationship between your values and your attitude should produce an emotional response is your attitude more positive or negative (as a default)? what are your long term goals - are you happy. will this job make you happy? (can this job make you happy)

it is critical to find a practice that makes you happy. you spend WAY too much time at work to be less than happy adjust your attitude - change your thinking, isolate your negative feelings and focus on how to change them, NOTHING is gained from negativity

self-improvement - setting goals USE YOUR EXTERNSHIP! goals - visualize yourself, write it down, make it real set short and long term goals set dates - avoid procrastination revise these dates PRN set goals just beyond realistic - push yourself

do you learn quickly are you a stickler for method and structure do you think on your feet what effect does stress have on you are you dependable are you honest are you adverse to doing things you don’t enjoy

skills computers - word, excel, powerpoint, web sites blood draws catheters manual differentials client interaction aggressive dogs aggressive cats anesthesia etc etc etc

use your existing knowledge to attain the next level of knowledge use short term goals to build into a larger goal don’t give up smaller goals will get you nowhere, unrealistic goals can be disheartening
