6 The Great Gatsby Chapter 4 Reading Check
Describe the relationship that Gatsby has with the people who attend his parties. What types of stories are told about Gatsby? Why does Nick get upset when Gatsby mentions Jordan? What did Meyer Wolfsheim fix in 1919? What happened as Nick tried to introduce Tom and Gatsby? What does Jordan tell Nick about Daisy on her wedding day? What does Jordan ask Nick to do for Gatsby? Why? What does the phrase “There are only the pursued, the pursuing, the busy, and the tired.” signify. How does the chapter end?

7 The Great Gatsby Homework
Read chapter 5. Complete vocabulary. Add to color chart. Find an example of simile, metaphor, and imagery in chapter 5. Write one quote that stands out to you in chapter 5. Why does this quote appeal to you? What is its significance?

8 Pre-reading Section 7 Pages 88-102
What parts of your life would you most like to escape? Can you escape these elements at some point in your life? If so, how? If not, why not? Read pages

9 Reading Questions What does she mean when she says, “I have decided not to grow up tame…” (pg 88)? What does Esperanza’s mother think as she reflects on her own life? How does Esperanza know the truth about the bruises and why does the author repeat the line, “He never hits me hard (pg 92)?” How does the garden change? Why does Esperanza cry under the tree? What was Esperanza expecting from the kiss and why are her expectations not fulfilled? What has Sally gained by getting married? What is the significance of not letting her look out the window?

10 Writing Write your next “chapter” (this should be #5…1/2 way there).
Choose a topic form your list. This time include a metaphor, an allusion, and idiom. Remember you should be keeping all your writings together to create your own book!!!

11 Map Draw a map of at least 5 places on Mango Street: character’s houses, apartments, stores, etc. You may also add other significant features of the neighborhood like pets, objects, trees, etc. Select one quotation from the novel for each building or feature of the street and copy it onto your map in a physically or symbolically appropriate location. (For example if I were talking about Esperanza’s house, I might write the quotation “It’s small and red with tight steps in front and windows so small you’d think they were holding their breath” (4) on the windows of the house.)
